Rental Rights Petition

Tell Idaho legislators that you support H462 and H459!

Please support H462 and H459, which merely provide minor adjustments to an imbalance of power that tenants experience. Over ⅓ of Idahoans rent – approximately 500,000 people. This modicum of help will matter to everyday Idahoans during this housing crisis.

H459 merely extends the time period upon which a landlord has to provide notice when they are raising the rent, to provide people a little more time to find a new place to live if they can’t afford the rent increase.

H462 will reduce conflicts between landlords and tenants:

  • Requires landlords to “show their work” regarding what portion of the security deposit they are keeping, and to provide an itemized receipt of charges they want to assess and the actual cost of repairs or cleaning.
  • Provides that the tenant may elect a walk through upon move-in and move-out with the landlord to identify the condition of the premises. Just like renting a car, you do a baseline inspection to document conditions so there is no dispute about the source of any damage.
  • Sets late fees at a reasonable amount to cover landlord costs of recouping rent without digging a hole of charges that the tenant can’t dig out of.

Please support these bills to support everyday Idahoans who are struggling at time when rents are increasing and there is a shortage of rental properties.
