My work concentrates on the relationship between conflict and the environment. Together with governmental institutions and societal organizations in the Netherlands, I seek to better understand the implications of militaries as ecological actors for national security and environmental injustice. I also study the use of remote sensing and satellite imagery as sources to document, assess, monitor, and verify ecological violence. While mapping and monitoring ecological violence through satellite technology has incredible potential, it also has the risk of advancing various political and military objectives, intensifying existing and limited imaginaries of how sustainable futures may look like, in addition to zooming out on the human and social costs of conflict and violence.
