KIND VAN

by
CHILD OF for English see below

CHILD OF

In the Netherlands, 1 in 4 children under the age of eighteen grow up with a parent with psychological and/or addiction problems. These children are referred to as COPMI (Children of Parents with a Mental Illness and/or addiction Issues).  This may involve one or both parents. (Young) adults also fall under this term, as they will always remain a child of their parents.

Growing up with a mentally vulnerable or addicted parent has a lifelong impact. COPMI have an increased risk of developing mental and/or addiction problems themselves. Those who have grown up with a mentally vulnerable or addicted parent often feel they are on their own. The visibility of COPMI and the availability of preventive help for COPMI is rather little, so they receive limited attention and support.

There is still a stigma on mental and addiction problems in society. This makes it difficult for COPMI to be open about their former and current situation. This is reinforced by feelings of shame they experience. Breaking this taboo is essential to ensure that COPMI are seen and heard and that they receive the attention and support they deserve.

Therefore, the Open Mind Foundation has joined forces with MIND Naasten Centraal, De Nationale Jeugdraad (NJR), het Trimbos Instituut, Met Zonder Ouders, and FNO Geestkracht to increase societal knowledge about COPMI.

Exhibition

With this traveling multimedia exhibition and an additional impact program, we provide insight into the consequences of parental psychological and addiction problems on a “child of” and aim to make growing up with a parent with psychological and addiction problems a topic of discussion.

In order to design this exhibition, we have collected gripping portraits and inspiring stories of 19 diverse COPMI with ages ranging between 20 and 80 years old. The portraits by photographer Sevilay Maria make it tangible how the portrayed try to step out of the shadow of their parents’ problems. They no longer have to remain silent; they are seen and heard. The personal stories tell what these “children of” experienced in their youth, the long-term impact it had and how they deal with it now.

This multimedia exhibition CHILD OF, which can also be viewed and listened to online via the QR code, will travel to various municipalities throughout the Netherlands by February the 10th (2023) onwards in order to raise societal awareness about COPMI. By doing so, we hope to contribute to more understanding and support for COPMI.
