Michigan’s health department announced 9,779 new coronavirus cases and 53 new COVID-19 deaths during its afternoon update Friday, Nov. 20.
The case increase was the largest one-day total reported to date, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Over the past seven days, the state has averaged 7,205 confirmed cases and 64 deaths per day. One week ago, Michigan averaged 6,167 cases and 59 deaths per day.
Michigan also reported a one-day high in testing with 84,223 diagnostic tests processed Thursday. Of those, 11,586 tests -- or 13.76% -- came back positive for COVID-19.
That rate has been above 10% since Nov. 1. Health experts recommend waiting for the positive test rate to drop below 5% before reopening schools and economies.

Hospitalizations reached 3,887 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 on Friday, nearing the height of the first wave, though they’re more spread out this time. Among the patients in hospitals this week, 835 were in the ICU and 403 on ventilators.

Since the start of the pandemic, at least 295,177 Michiganders have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and 8,377 have died. Another 26,004 probable cases and 397 probable deaths have been tracked by the health department.
Eighty-one of Michigan’s 83 counties added new cases Friday, with the exceptions of Luce and Chippewa counties. It’s worth noting, Chippewa County had 37 cases removed from their total, which typically means an error was corrected.
Wayne and Oakland counties reported the most new cases with 1,369 and 1,295, respectively. Macomb added 922, followed by Kent with 585, Genesee with 382, Gratiot with 357, Washtenaw with 249, Livingston with 231 and Muskegon with 224 cases.
Counties with the most deaths included Macomb (10), Kent (eight), Genesee (four) and Kalamazoo (four). Oakland and Muskegon reported three deaths each, while Ingham, Eaton and Arenac counties each added two new deaths.

Cases by day it was reported to the state
First is a chart showing new cases reported to the state each day for the past month. This is based on when a confirmed coronavirus test is reported to the state, which means the patient first became sick days before.

(In a few instances, a county reported a negative number in daily new cases, following a retroactive reclassification by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In those instances, we subtracted cases from the prior date and put 0 in the reported date.)
The next chart below shows new cases for the past month based on onset of symptoms. In this chart, numbers for the most recent days are incomplete because of the lag time between people getting sick and getting a confirmed coronavirus test result, which can take up to a week or more.
