Woman accused of falsely reporting threat to set hijab on fire won't face charges

ANN ARBOR, MI - A woman who Ann Arbor police say falsely reported being threatened for wearing a hijab last year won't be charged.

Police said a woman reported being approached on Nov. 11, 2016, by a white man who threatened to light her hijab on fire if she did not remove it, even displaying a lighter, while she walked on East William Street near South State Street.

Police announced in December 2016 that after hours of investigation, reviewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses, they determined the incident did not occur.

Though the woman who reported the incident could have faced a felony charge for falsely reporting a felony, Washtenaw County Chief Deputy Assistant Prosecutor Steve Hiller said on Monday, Feb. 13, that his office declined to authorize charges in the matter.

He declined to comment further.
