ANN ARBOR, MI - A man told a University of Michigan student to remove her hijab or he'd set her on fire with a lighter in downtown Ann Arbor, police say.
Between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, a student was in the 600 block of East William near State Street when the unknown man approached and threatened her, she told Ann Arbor police.
The woman complied and left the area.
The suspect is a white male, age 20 to 30, with an athletic build, bad body odor and an unkempt appearance, according to Ann Arbor Police. He also appeared to be intoxicated with slurred speech.
The Ann Arbor Police are investigating the incident.

The U-M Division of Public Safety and Security in a statement said local police are conducting additional patrols in the area.
In a Facebook post, State Rep.-elect Yousef Rabhi of Ann Arbor linked the incident with President-elect Donald Trump and said he was working to fight such behaviors.
"I am currently building a coalition of elected officials who will fight to make our community a safe space from the devastating racism, sexism and xenophobia that Trump has empowered," he wrote.
