Research Services

The place to collect and share research information and data, make discoveries and develop your knowledge and skills.

About us

Welcome to the UvA/AUAS Library. Just like the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), the Library is spread across various locations in Amsterdam. Students and employees of both universities use all our library services at these 13 inspiring and hospitable locations. The UvA/AUAS Library is one of the largest libraries in the Netherlands. You have a good chance of finding the research information and data that is relevant for you here. Besides, the Library is the place to study, collaborate, expand your network, make discoveries and develop your knowledge and skills. You can choose from more than 4,500 modern study spaces. Every month there is a full programme of workshops and events. Researchers can make use of the Library's services, information, tools and systems that enable them to perform, publish and valorise their research. And anyone who needs personal advice is welcome to check in to our Library either online or offline and get in contact with the Library’s subject librarian. On top of that, the Allard Pierson is part of the University Library. The Allard Pierson is a museum and manages UvA’s heritage collections. Internationally renowned collections in the areas of archaeology, the history of books, Jewish culture, church history, cartography, literature, graphic design and zoology make this one of the leading heritage collections in Europe. And did you know that we are renovating a former hospital and combining this with a new wing to form a single building for the library? The new University Library location will open in 2024 and will become one of the main attractions of the campus.

🌟 This month, our Member Spotlight shines on Data Science Centre member Dr. Paula Helm, Assistant Professor in Data & Ethics at the Faculty of Humanities! Many of the DSC community members have met Paula already at some of our meet-ups, or maybe they attended her Ethics of Data workshop in February this year. ❤️ Paula collaborates with Computational Linguists, Digital Anthropologists and Civil Society Actors. She highlights a collaboration with indigenous people in the Amazon on language digitization as a means to (re)vitalize indigenous knowledge, and a project with the NGO Respond Crisis Translation on the effects of Language Modeling Bias and flawed results in machine translation processes in asylum requests. 📢#CallForApplications! The UvA Library manages the UvA Diamond Open Access Fund that supports ‘diamond open access’ initiatives: publication platforms and journals related to the Universiteit van Amsterdam that do not charge for publication or reading. This year, it is once again possible for new, emerging or proven UvA diamond open access initiatives to apply for funding. The new round of applications closes on 1 July 2024. So far, the UvA Diamond Open Access Fund has supported 16 UvA-related initiatives. In 2023, an amount was paid to Studia RosenthalianaTijdschrift SociologieEuropean Law Blog and the radical open access collective SOAPBOX. Also, the diamond publishing platform Openjournals has once again received support from the fund. 👏 Are you part of, or do you know, an UvA-related platform or journal that can be added to this list? Let us know! https://lnkd.in/e-TW7vZ6 #openaccess #openscience

Today we shine the Data Science Centre Member Spotlight on Shubha Guha! She is researcher, software engineer and Data steward at the Universiteit van Amsterdam Informatics Institute. On of the recent highlights she looks back on is the presentation on her paper on how automated data cleaning can hurt fairness in machine learning-based decision making. 💡 🌍 Being part of the DSC community allows Shubha to zoom out and get the more global perspective of inter- and transdisciplinary work: “.. there is so much innovation (and also hype) around AI and machine learning that it can be easy to lose sight of all the other meaningful and pioneering applications of data science. I value the occasional change of perspective from talking to DSC members in other disciplines ..” ❤️ Shubha's favorite data science method? Amidst the deep learning models making the news and winning competitions, she really loves to see elegant old-school solutions for recommending retail or supermarket products: “Sometimes smaller and simpler is better than expensive hardware and weeks of model training.” Read the full interview with Shubha here: https://lnkd.in/ezMd3DuH #UvADataScienceCentre #DataScience #AI #EthicalAI

Every month, we interview a Data Science Centre Affiliate Member to find out more about how they apply data science within their own research discipline. This month, the spotlight shines on Dr. Joachim Goedhart, Assistant Professor in Molecular Cytology, at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS), University of Amsterdam. He is passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing, within the Data Science Centre community and beyond. He set up a dashboard that summarizes and displays the data that is measured by students in the course “Cellulaire Oncologie”, and he was one of the workshop instructors at last year’s Data Science Day, where he taught participants how to build an interactive web application from scratch using R-code.
