Does not making eye contact on video calls actually impact the success of your online communication? Short answer: Yes. Longer answer, here's what the research says: • When psychologists compared individuals who made eye contact to those who didn't in virtual environments, those who didn't were consistently found to be less memorable (Mason et al., 2004), less attractive (Kaisler & Leder, 2017), and were deemed to be less believable when they spoke (Kreysa et al., 2016). • Your brain and nervous system interpret eye contact over video the same as eye contact in real life (Hietanen et al., 2020). • Therapists who made eye contact and leaned forward over video were perceived to be more empathetic and have a better relationship with their clients than those who didn't (Dowell & Berman, 2013). • People feel most comfortable with eye contact lasting just over 3 seconds and feel uncomfortable with eye contact lasting longer than this (Binetti et al., 2016). Ok, so natural eye contact or the lack thereof on video calls is important. It's a big reason behind why I founded my company, More Connection Co., and built my product, the More Connection Cam. I wanted to created an eye contact camera where people could have high quality natural eye contact on video calls, where you could actually look at the person on the screen and not into a camera covering their face, for an affordable price. I've now done that, and am currently working hard to get the product manufactured and launched. Even better, when both people use one, they've said that they're able to make “eye-to-eye contact” as if they were in a real-life “face-to-face environment”.
