Hitte, droogte of verzilte grond: klimaatverandering stelt de voedsel- en landbouwsector voor grote uitdagingen. In onderzoeksproject LettuceKnow werken onderzoekers en zeven zaadveredelingsbedrijven aan weerbare sla. Dat doen ze door op ongekende schaal eigenschappen van vijfhonderd verschillende slalijnen in kaart brengen. Het onderzoek helpt de Nederlandse toppositie in de zaadveredeling te behouden. ‘Het begon bij een tv-item dat ik zag op AT5 over de loden waterleidingen in Amsterdam-Noord. Ik weet nog dat ik dacht: “Goh, wat bizar dat dit nog een probleem is”. Het bracht Wim Noorduin, chemicus bij AMOLF, op het idee om de chemische reacties die hij onderzocht in zijn fossielenonderzoek in te zetten voor een nieuwe testmethode voor looddetectie. En die werkte. Met zijn praktisch toepasbare loodtest wil Noorduin de oorzaak vinden van loodvergiftiging voor miljoenen kinderen wereldwijd. De ontdekking laat zien dat fundamenteel onderzoek tot inzichten kan leiden met een grote maatschappelijke impact, en die, in het geval van Noorduin, 'je van tevoren nooit had voorzien.' Initiatives can now be submitted for a new NWA-call for research proposals on Adaptive Delta management in Bangladesh. Knowledge institutions and societal parties are invited to form consortia to develop research proposals using the living labs methodology. You can now register to partake in the collaborative workshops for this call on 26 June and 3 July. Six Life Science teams have been selected to start a new round of Venture Challenge. Under the supervision of experienced coaches, these teams will learn about developing or improving their business case. The new Perspectief round is opening this summer. Researchers, companies and civil society organisations that want to work in a consortium on technological innovation with societal and economic impact can once again submit their proposals. Six application-oriented research projects will receive funding through the Open Technology Programme this month. The awarded projects will conduct research including: • the development of new atomically thin 2D materials that offer single-proton emitters, making the integration of emitters in quantum chips more efficient • a sound-based detection method for plastic waste hidden beneath the water surface, which contributes to finding possible solutions for plastic pollution. • the development of a novel wireless stretchable textile coil array, used with MRI scans to make them easier, more comfortable and faster, thereby reducing the cost of these scans. In total, NWO is awarding over €4.5 million this round. Involved companies and other organisations are investing another €900 thousand in these projects. NWO invites all interested applicants and involved organisations to attend an information session on the Open Technology Programme (OTP). The online meeting takes place on 20 June 2024, from 13:30 to 14:30. It will focus specifically on the impact approach and the user committee. Within the OTP, applicants can choose which form of impact - scientific and/or societal impact - will be leading in the research. But what exactly does this mean?
