Since this is my own book, I'm not going to write a review. I'm using this space to let you know when there are discounts or marketing promotions, as well as share some thoughts on how the book came to be.

Frozen Stiff Drink is my eighth novel, also the sixth in the Braxton Campus Mysteries series. The series follows typical cozies in that it doesn't contain graphic violence, sexual content, or vulgar language; however, I've turned the genre upside down by focusing on a young male protagonist who is a single father and relies on his wit, connections, and intelligence to solve crimes, all while he's teaching, working at film company, and trying to keep his eccentric nana under control.

This series has been so much fun! Each book gets better and more entertaining! I love Cudney's writing and the way he can put the unexpected into his stories!

I've loved seeing the character growth in all the characters in each book! Kellan is such a likable character and being in his head is the best! And nothing can come easy for my boy! I also seriously love the sweet moments between Kellan and April, even though they have a lot of chaotic things going on!

There was a certain scene of bickering between Nana D and Kellan that had me laughing out loud too! I'm serious when I say this needs to be a Netflix series already! Cudney also knows how to write cliffhangers dang good, leaving me yearning for the next book!

I thought life in Braxton without Nana D wouldn’t be so much interesting and entertaining, but James J. Cudney, the author of already six books in the Braxton Campus Mysteries series, proved me wrong. Frozen Stiff Drink is as much entertaining, funny, and capturing even in the hours of her absence, because he smartly used a whole small army of other characters to make us glued to his latest story.

The disappearance of a beloved, witty and cunning mayoress, the series of new mysterious murders, and the barreling winter blizzard are more than excellent reasons to make this literary riddle a successful page-turner. And introducing a new arrogant “villain” who fights with Kellan for the heart of the same darling adds a nice kick and a few extra pinches of love-spice to our reading experience.

Without further ado, James nailed it again, ending Frozen Stiff Drink with a BLAST of the cliffhanger! The wait was worth it!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Winter in Wharton County is not something to mess with especially when Madam Zenya has predicted the storm would change Kellan’s life. It sure has him worried when his Nana D. goes missing. She was last seen visiting a patient at Willow Trees. Later that patient is found dead. The bodies start to pile up when another is found frozen stiff in a car that had plowed into a snowbank.

In addition to the dead bodies, Kellan’s brother Hampton’s marriage is on the rocks after his father-in-law accuses him of stealing money from his company. Sheriff April Montague is juggling the deaths but her personal life is in flux as she tries to handle something from her past that now has a shot at ruining her future. She is also trying to help Kellan find his grandmother.

A missing person, dead bodies, a surprise visit, embezzlement, some bad reviews, and more. Someone has shaken the Braxton snowglobe and created chaos everywhere. They will all need a good stiff drink to thaw them out of this frozen tundra of mayhem.

______

I have enjoyed every book in this series and Mr. Cudney continues to top himself.

This time my favorite character Nana D. was in peril and I was totally enthralled by the search to find her. Madam Zenya sets the story off with her prediction and she pops up throughout the story to try to help Kellan. Hampton, his wife, and inlaws are center stage in this story. Kellan’s folks have taken the kids to Disney World but their vacay may not end as they had planned. April and Kellan are really trying to move their relationship forward but hit a huge roadblock. The family dynamics in this series continue to evolve and is what draws me in every time. They are authentic and the dialogue pops. I am invested in these characters and always excited to see what is going on in their lives, including the murder and confusion.

Mr. Cudney has written an intricate story that is multifaceted with subplots twisted together and Kellan in the middle of them all. I love that even with serious events the author expertly sprinkles humor in all the right places. Full of twists and misdirections, the pace is at a constant high. The ending was exciting and full of surprises. It was very entertaining to follow each clue and twist. There is one person that really rubbed me the wrong way but you will have to read the book to see if they were actually implicated in any crime.

While new crimes are wrapped up by the end of the book, there are plotlines that carry on from one book to the next. You know you get the feeling of accomplishment when the story ends. Well, I have learned to hold on tight at the end of these books because the author always gets his readers excited for the next book with a cliffhanger and this one rocked the world!! You listen here, James J. Cudney! Book 7 better be released soon!!

Frozen Stiff Drink was frigidly cold Perfect Escape! Grab a blanket before you start reading this book because a Braxton winter will have you shivering right along with its residents.

I love this series by Cudney, and each one I read is better than the last because we become so familiar with the family members who are both quirky and endear themselves to us quickly. This is number 6 and can certainly be read as a stand-alone, but it's probably better to start with the first one as there are lots of characters and you become fond of many of them. Cudney is a master story-teller as he has Kellen solving mysteries, parenting his adorable daughter, falling in love, and dealing with his snarky grandmother, Nana D. And this one introduces a new "villain" you will love to hate and is sure to appear in number 7. And don't get me started on the cliffhanger ending...! It's just a great read!

Winter has struck Wharton County, and it’s icy bite is a bitter one! What I’ve always loved about the Braxton Campus mysteries is the mastering of character development world building. In book 6, Frozen Stiff Drink, the perfection of build up and unraveling little clue nuggets continues. Only for me, this time feels more intimate, more emotional which is awesome! Maybe because I love Nana D. so much, and she finds herself missing, so for a large portion of the book I was devouring pages like a ravenous animal wanting to know what’s happened to her!
Along with the Nana D. drama, a murderous chaos breaks out, a family is under the radar of very vicious people as they’re accused of taking an outrageous sum of money, and Kellan’s love life is put through the ringer. Whew, there’s a lot going on in Wharton County, but what’s phenomenal about the whole situation(s) is that James J. Cudney has really dotted his I’s and crossed his T’s. No stone is left unturned, and no corner is left undusted.
In previous books Kellan begins to build a romance with a local law enforcement beauty, April. She’s down to earth, and dedicated to her job. I really like her! She really has her hands full with nasty, heinous deaths going down, but what’s possibly even more complicated - well personal, anyway - is that her old flame returns and reaps absolute havoc on her and Kellan's relationship. The man is a buffoon, but kind of funny. The way he and Kellan interact with each other seriously cracked me up!
Now, I mentioned a family in financial turmoil. It isn’t just any family. It’s Kellan’s brother Hampton, and the mess he’s in is deep and dangerous! His marriage has become a rocky one and the accusations only stir the pot of disaster! I absolutely loved this book! It’s one of my favorites in the series and I can’t wait for another instalment! Hands down stars!

4.5/5 stars for this great addition to the Braxton Mysteries series.

Book 6 in James J. Cudney’s Braxton Campus Mysteries is another page turner, a shell-shocker and will most certainly leave you gasping, “What?” but in a good way! Let’s get to the meat of the story.

Murder Mystery Plot: I think this author is getting cleverer and cleverer with his plot weaving. Maybe he has some nefarious plans up his sleeve… hmm… The murder to solve is who killed Hiram Grey, a not so well-liked county judge. Once again, there are several aspects to the mystery and a few secondary stories to delve into. We have the murder(s), a secretive rally, a new-comer who annoyingly turns up in several parts of Kellan’s life, an anti-Arywick smear campaign and a missing Nana D, just to name some. There are several suspects and you can imagine each of them doing the deed as their opportunities and motives are revealed. There are a couple I really wanted to be guilty too. Even if you think you know who is (are?) guilty, you’ll still be surprised to discover the motive(s) and how the opportunity arose. The red herrings are strategically placed and believable enough to leave you thoroughly perplexed. It’s great.

There are a lot of threads to keep track of in this novel, but I think they crossover one another enough that the reader won’t be too lost while reading. That said, I would say this book is definitely better suited to series readers. In addition to several sub-plots there are also quite a few characters, both new and ‘old’. Perhaps, it may be a bit more challenging for newer readers to follow and fully engage with the tale.

Characters: We’re treated to time with some of our series favourites once again… and we get little life updates on characters we met in earlier instalments. Nana D is such a larger than life character that sometimes she’s a lot to handle. We get enough of her sarcasm, antics and attitude but not too much that it’s over the top; a perfect balance. Madam Zenya, makes anoher appearance, or appearnaces, in this story and I must admit I loved every word of her dramatics. Kellan and April continue to work at developing a relationship. They’re cute and I look forward to more scenes between the two of them.

And then there’s Fox. This new character is such a pain for Kellan, maybe you could even consider him another Myriam is poor Kellan’s life. In fact, I’d be hard-pressed to say who is more obnoxious between the two. You’ll have to read to decide for yourself!

The cliffhanger: While Frozen Stiff Drink is a full novel, with a satisfying, all-loose-ends-tied-up ending, this devious author pulls us into the next instalment in explosive style. All I can say is, he’d better have book 7 ready soon.

James J. Cudney has done it again, written a maze of a book, with subplots that left me bewildered and a cliffhanger that left me impatient to get my hands on the next book.
He is a master magician, whose writing talent is ginormous. I loved the way he chose his words, each one of them gave a powerful imagery. This book had fewer characters so it was really easy to read. I could finish it in one sitting.
I love a whodunit where I could play detective. This was absolutely perfect. The series is much better appreciated and loved if read from book 1.
A fabulous investigative series and a perfect whodunit.
And no, I couldn't guess the killer.

Kellen’s Incredible Life Inadvertently Solving Mysteries

In this 6th book of the Braxton Campus cozy mystery series, the author brings another character to the front of the action. Madam Zeyna predicts some occurrences in Kellan’s future that may be insurmountable. Once again, Cudney’s ability to portray his characters made me smile. While we envision Madame Zeyna – we know exactly how she may look – Cudney focuses on her personality and how she fits into the action.

Kellan’s grandmother, the feisty and wise Nana D goes missing. By the way, she is one of my favorite characters in this entire series. Cudney has created a spunky older woman we all might like to be when we age. Kellan is on overload searching for her while also solving the murder of a prominent Braxton citizen the has the town in near lock down. Then there is his tempestuous liaison with the Deputy Sheriff, April, which is becoming a solid relationship, but both have different duties, and this always tears at their relationship. As this series moves along, we watch the characters grow and learn life’s lessons. An air of mystery shadows this story and I feel it may run into the next story, though all the stories in this series are stand-along if you wish to read them that way.

Cudney builds an exciting story around these events, with occurrences and surprises we don’t see coming. As with all his stories, he ends this one with a superb cliffhanger. The story finishes nicely, but now we know there will be another soon.

Frozen Stiff Drink is book 6 in the Braxton Campus Mysteries and only the second book in the series I have read so far, this is easy to read as a stand alone as Cudney provides you with a list of the characters are the beginning of the book and there is enough back story throughout for them to make it easy to follow.

There is a lot going on in this story with several story lines interweaving but not so much that you lose track, we have murder, embezzlement and then Nana D goes missing! This was good clean cosy mystery that will keep you guessing, once again I though I had the culprit down but a few red herrings made me rethink and once again I was off the mark! Now that makes a good mystery in my eyes, and with Madam Zenya predictions coming true I can't wait to what is in store for Kellen and his family next!

Another great 5 star read

This was an awesome read, especially after having read the complete series. What I'm sad about is that there's not another one to read right now during the quarantine because I enjoy the characters so much!

This series is an easy read full of characters who grow to feel like family and new ones who the reader enjoys getting to know. Trying to figure out the mystery is fun with its twists and turns.

James Cudney is masterful with his relatable characters. I can't wait to read the next one!!

If you're looking for a series that will keep you reading, you've found it here!

I was sent a copy of this book by the author as I am one of his beta readers so I just want to thank him for allowing me to do this for him.

This is book 6 in his Braxton Campus Mysteries series and while it could be read as a standalone I highly recommend starting with book 1 and working your way through the series because each book mentions things that happened in previous books as well as people who have been in previous books.

I have such a hard time writing reviews for books in general but that’s especially the case when it’s a book I absolutely loved. There’s so much to say but at the same time I can’t say most of it for fear of spoiling things for people who haven’t read it yet.

We know from the synopsis that Nana D disappears and since she is one of my favorite characters in this series I was speedily reading this trying to find out what happened to her. There are things that happened during the search for her that had my heart racing.

There were some side stories going on at the same time and a lot of them brought out several emotions in me. Of course there was all of that with Nana D, then you have the romance (that by the way does not overpower the story) and oh my gosh April was getting on my nerves with how she was handling certain situations and Fox ugh lets just say I can’t stand him. He’s cocky and I can’t believe the way he’s acting especially since he’s just appeared. If you’ve read the story then you know what I’m talking about.

There was of course some humor in here as well and then that ending!!! I immediately messaged James asking him what he thinks he’s doing. It ends on a cliffhanger like he does in every book and while I am not the biggest fan of cliffhangers only because I am impatient and want to know how things are going to turn out not because they are bad I really was blown away by this particular ending. I mean if ever I loved a cliffhanger this is one of those times. As of the time when I am writing this review this book hasn’t even released yet and I am already wanting to get my hands on the next book.

I will end with this. James has done it again. He has written 8 books now and I have loved every single one of them but this is hands down my favorite of them all. If you haven’t started this series or read any of his books yet you really are missing out.

Kellan Ayrwick strikes again

In the sixth book in James J Cudney's Braxton County Mysteries, college lecturer 7-time crime buster Kellan Ayrwick is at it again. When a prominent citizen, a judge no less falls victim to murder, Kellan finds himself wrapped up in the heart of the mystery, as usual finding himself partly at odds with the official investigation, carried out by his erstwhile girlfriend, April, the local police chief.
Things are complicated even morezwhen his grandmother, Nana D, - girl in a blizzard, one of the worst for years, having met with the judge not long before his death.
Just to make matters worse, April's ex-husband suddenly appears on the scene, and announces that they are still married and he wants to be with her once again, and Kellan feels his presence threatens his relationship with the beautiful police chief, added to which, Kellan feels there's something suspicious about the man.
There are so many intangibles present in the case, but the author does a great job of pulling them all together. He even finishes the book with one of my pet hates, a cliffhanger ending, but I can forgive him this one transgression, it's such a well told tale.
Five stars from this reader, and wholly recommended

This series gets better with every book I read.

The characters and plots are never stagnant. Each book holds my interest from start to finish and this one was no exception.

With a famous psychic predicting change to Kellens life, the twists & turns follow.

I love a good cozy mystery & Frozen Stiff Drink quenches the thirst quite well.

It is hard to believe that Kellan Ayrwick has only been back at the Braxton Campus for a year in this series of mysteries. In that time he has solved several murders and other criminal activities and either charmed or alienated family and residents. Just when the poor guy thought he could relax with his daughter and nephew away in Florida with his parents, and his developing romance with the town sheriff April on track, a storm front races in.

It is not just the snow that Kellan is up to his eyes in, with his fiesty grandmother going missing, corruption allegations rocking the judicial office, accusations piling up against all his family members and bodies being discovered on an alarmingly regular basis.

As always the author keeps us on our toes with fast paced action and a growing list of suspects; all well drawn with their own quirks and characteristics. Some are familiar from other books and others new to the town.. including the irritatingly arrogant Fox Terrell who seems to turn up when he is least wanted or expected.

James Cudney writes a very good murder mystery and leaves the reader guessing to the last minute as to who could be the killer. He also unravels the other mysteries very satisfactorily in the final chapters, although we are left with a cliffhanger guaranteed to encourage you to buy the next book in the series, which of course we will.

Recommended for murder mystery readers who enjoy second guessing the author right to the last page.

When a snowstorm barrels into Wharton County, it leaves murder in its wake.

In Frozen Stiff Drink, Kellan Arywick has his hands full with threats to his family, a missing Nanna D., and the annoying arrival of his girlfriend’s ex- not to mention two murders and a partridge in a pear tree (kidding). He does have the worst luck of any hero though.

Constance’s frightening premonition cracked holes in the perimeter of my skull like a determined woodpecker in search of its next meal.
FROZEN STIFF DRINK- JAMES J. CUDNEY

Worried about Nanna D, who isn’t answering her phone and can’t be found, Kellan searches all her favorite haunts with no success, though he’s soon immersed in allegations of corruption against his older brother, and the mysterious murder of two prominent men of the city. Is Nana D. somehow involved? And what about the elusive Fox? What is his end game?

There are multiple plotlines to follow, but the author does a masterful job of tying loose strings by the end of the book. Nana D. continues to be a favorite with her snarky wit and indomitable attitude. I’m SO glad she survives the storm (Oops, spoiler alert!).

This book mirrors what’s going on in my part of the world right now, at least with regard to the weather. We also had a snowstorm last week and the city is still covered in snow and ice. So that makes it the perfect environment to stay in and read a book, about people coping with a sudden winter weather warning. In addition to this, Kellan tries to determine what happened to cause the death of one of Wharton County’s most illustrious citizens. At least he doesn’t have to worry about Emma and Ulan, because they’ve gone to Disney World with their grandparents/aunt and uncle, Wesley and Violet.

Kellan certainly still has enough on his plate, though because while everyone prepares for the storm, Nana D goes missing! (No, not Nana D!) Kellan is also trying to help his brother out of his troubles but then things get even worse for Hampton when his father-in-law also turns up missing. In other news, Kellan is also constantly annoyed by a parking-spot stealer, which is just the cherry on the sludge sundae which is Kellan’s day.

I had a nice feeling of coming full circle when I read this book, not only because Kellan and Emma have been in Braxton for a year now but Kellan has actually been working on his own tv show, which is what he’d wanted at the start of the series and I think it was nice for him to get that. Of course he is still professoring, and still butting heads with Dr. Miriam Castle, but I enjoy their back and forth.

I was surprised by a few of the twists and turns this story took, which I think is not easy to do, so kudos, Mr. Cudney. All in all, I found this a delightful diversion and I eagerly look forward to my next trip to Pennsylvania to see what happens next!

I should have started this series with the first book as I felt I was stepping into someone´s story partway. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable read with plenty of action and interesting characters. And there are as many characters as War and Peace. Again, if I had started with the first book, I would have already been familiar with many of these people. The main character, Kellan, who inadvertently gets involved in murders, is a very real and likeable person. He lacks self-confidence and second-guesses himself at times, but has his heart in the right place. At one time he states, "I am not the bread bowl. I am the dessert, the last thing you want and the only thing you need. The part you will remember for the rest of the night..."
There's a lot going on in this story; embezzlement, immigration issues, ex-spouses showing up, old friends, complicated family issues, upsetting predictions and of course murders, all happening during a snow storm. All the while Kellan is trying to maintain his relationship with the Chief of Police! My favourite character is the mayor, Kellan´s Nany D. Now I need to go back and start at the beginning of the series.

Once again, we have a convoluted mystery that Kellan ends up right in the middle of. Kellan's brother Hampton is accused of embezzlement and is fired from his job, a retired judge is murdered, Nana D is missing and things are happening to cause everyone in the Ayrwick family to have problems. When Hampton is arrested for murder, Kellan disobeys the sheriff and investigates to clear his brother.

There is always a lot happening in this series. There are many red herrings, diverging plotlines and characters that we know and love, getting involved in the mystery. Kellan uses his interview skills from his days in television to ferret out information. Fortunately for him, his parents, daughter and cousin are in Florida so that gives him more time to sleuth. There is a complication in Kellan's romance with April, the sheriff, that had me a bit annoyed. It has not been solved completely yet, but I am sure it will be in the next book. There is a cliffhanger, but not as much as the last book, so I can relax and not be too upset with James. As usual there is humour and sarcasm throughout the story. I continue to be impressed with the character development in this series and I have gotten to know the family and friends quite well. The story is well-written and James Cudney does a great job pulling all the storylines together to give us a wonderful conclusion. These books can be read as standalones as each mystery is contained in the story, but I definitely recommend you read this series in order to get to know the characters, their relationships and see their development. Bravo James, for penning another great mystery for us to enjoy. I received a copy of this book from Great Escapes Tours upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Frozen Stiff Drink by James J. Cudney is a complex plot with multiple crimes and intriguing characters.
Will Kellen find the culprit before his family's reputation is ruined?
Kellen
Kellen is a college professor and our sleuth. His family has an outstanding reputation locally as his Grandmother "Nana D" is the mayor. However, it seems that someone is out to get them. Kellen is slightly paranoid that Fox, April's husband, is behind it. Perhaps that is just wishful thinking.

I like Kellen. However, he has a large family, and they don't always get along. He loves April, but they have a few things to take care of, such as getting divorced.
The Mystery
We start with Nana D missing, a murder, and April's husband staying with her for a few days. There are lots of characters to follow and keep track of, but the author does give us a cast list at the front of the book, along with a map.
Four Stars
My rating for Frozen Stiff Drink by James J. Cudney is four stars. I enjoyed the banter, especially from Nana D. The mystery was good; it kept me guessing. However, the ending isn't what you would expect. I recommend reading these books in order; that way, the characters are better set in your mind.

Frozen Stiff Drink is another incredibly fast-paced and fascinating murder mystery in this great series by author, James J. Cudney. This one is even more complex as it involves three murders and a couple of close attempts so you have to pay attention and stay on your toes while reading. This book also includes a ramp up in Kellan's relationship with law enforcer, April, despite some trials presented in the unexpected appearance of her husband, Fox Terrell, who turns out to have some unexpected relationships with the people of Wharton County, and his continued interference in her murder cases.

Kellan's brother, Hampton, plays a bigger role in this tale and becomes involved in a lot of intrigue. He is accused of embezzlement by his father-in-law, Orin, Read, the founder of the firm where he works, and when Orin is discovered dead, Hampton is the natural suspect in the case.

Nana D, now mayor of Wharton County, but still high spirited and indefatigable in her dealings with family, friends and her constituents. Nana D goes missing during a bad snow storm and Kellan is worried about her. During his search for her he finds her car with another body inside it, but no sign of Nana D.

The story line is exciting with lots of twists and turns and the ending was clever and unexpected.

All the wonderful family elements that make this series so special are present with Kellan's daughter, Emma, going to Disney Land with his parents and his surrogate son, Ulan. Francesca, Kellan's on-so-dead mobster related wife who he is trying to divorce, also pops up in a threatening manner as she wants to get her hands on Emma.

James J. Cudney has a very natural style of writing and includes lots of great description in a simple and unencumbering way which does not detract from the pace of the story. I look forward to see what this author produces next.

Both clues and motives for murder abound in Frozen Stiff Drink, the latest addition to James J. Kidney’s Braxton Campus Mystery Series. With each book, I think the plot threads can’t get more tangled than in the previous books, but they do! With a cast of characters that will intrigue you, draw you in, and evoke strong reactions, this cozy mystery will provide you with all the distraction you need during this time of shelter in place.

Kellan has a history of finding dead bodies since he returned to Wharton County; but his girlfriend, Sheriff April Montague, has finally begun to accept that he doesn’t go looking for trouble. With the series' usual large number of characters, this book holds a challenge when trying to sort through the many relationships, but the author helps out with a list of characters including their connections to other characters.

I enjoyed Frozen Stiff Drink all the way to the conclusion where my jaw dropped as the many plot threads were resolved, and several new issues dramatically appeared beckoning me into delightful anticipation of the next installment in the series.

I would like to extend my thanks to author James J. Cudney and to Gumshoe (Next Chapter) for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

If I have to describe this book in one word, I would said - WOW! I have been following this series from the beginning and with each book, we readers were given a little shocker - a zap that you might not even feel. But this book was a total jaw-dropper! WOW!

I suppose almost every chapter starts and ends with a twist. Forget cozy, Frozen Stiff Drink keeps one on the edge of their seat. Buckle up, peeps, coz this is going to be one heck of a roller-coaster ride!
The book ends with a cliffhanger - and I have a teeny-tiny complaint. It is not fair we readers are made to wait for months for the next book. James, please publish the next book ...um, right now?

I am eagerly waiting to see what's next for Kellan and Nana D. In the previous book, we saw Madame Zenya make predictions about the snow storm and more dead bodies in Wharton County.

I absolutely loved every bit of this book. Be it the character development or the suspense, this book is beyond expectations on every level. James is a master storyteller and I am in awe of his writing.

I highly recommend Frozen Stiff Drink.

My favourite so far in the series.

Along with murder and intrigue, this book is filled with moments of tension, where you just can't read fast enough to see the outcome. Characters are well developed, and you actually feel the emotions they're going through. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

This is such a fun series. I love the characters and their interactions. The stories are fun and engaging. This is both a quick read and one to get lost in to break away from everything that’s going on right now. I can’t wait for the next installment.

Once more, Kellan is put through the wringer. I’m aware that this series is shelved as a cosy mystery – and that’s true in as much as there is no undue gore, bad language or graphic sex. But that doesn’t prevent poor old Kellan going through yet more misery. However, Cudney is very adept at also introducing snarky exchanges to diffuse some of the angst that is building up as family members go missing, hateful characters taunt our put-upon protagonist and family members are targeted by a nasty smear campaign. And that’s only some of what goes on in this fast-moving story.

I whipped through this one at a fair clip, as it really grabbed me. Cudney is very good at producing an almost endless procession of likely suspects that could be in the frame for the murders. By now, there are a fair number of characters we have got to know throughout the six books so far. And Cudney manages to ensure that a fair number of them have strong motives to want to kill the victims. No wonder the Chief of Police, the fair April, is getting a tad frayed around the edges…

As ever, I really like the fact that this small community is nicely intergenerational. The feisty Nana D, as a seventy-something year old, is now the Mayor and we regularly meet up with her contemporaries, who also are involved in community life. It’s so refreshing to find this age-group fairly represented as fully functioning members of society with something to offer – and Nana’s resilience and refusal to be overwhelmed in the face of the woes piling up for the Ayrwick family is lovely to see. Yes… I’ve probably connected with spiky Nana D on a level that is not necessarily completely healthy.

Just a word of warning. While this book completely ties up the murder mysteries and we know exactly whodunit and why – this story is left on a cliff-hanger ending, where all sorts of other major issues are unresolved. I’ll be honest, I’m a bit torn – I generally loathe these sorts of endings. However, I’m prepared to give Cudney a pass due to the fact that he’s provided a thumping good plot in this particular slice of Kellan’s adventures. Highly recommended for fans of well plotted murder mysteries – but whatever you do, don’t crash into this series at this stage. There are so many characters so tightly intertwined with an eventful backstory, you’ll probably sink without trace under the weight of trying to keep up with who did what to whom, causing what’s-her-face wanting to do something else to what’s-his-name. You’d be far better putting this one back on the shelf and reaching instead for the first book, Academic Curveball.
