After college, I accepted roles working in technology, program management, and business operations in the retail, sports, entertainment, and media industries. Although I enjoy my career, I began to focus on other passions in 2016: telling stories and connecting people through words. On my blog, I started the 365 Daily Challenge, where I post a word each day that has some meaning to me, then converse with everyone about life. Since this is my own book, I'm not going to write a review. I'm using this space to let you know when there are discounts or marketing promotions, as well as share some thoughts on how the book came to be.

Broken Heart Attack is my fourth novel, also the second in the Braxton Campus Mysteries series. The series follows typical cozies in that it doesn't contain graphic violence, sexual content, or vulgar language; however, I've turned the genre upside down by focusing on a young male protagonist who is a single father and relies on his wit, connections, and intelligence to solve crimes, all while he's teaching, working at film company, and trying to keep his eccentric nana under control.

This is the second book in the Braxton Campus Mysteries series and another home run! I love, love, love being in Kellan's head and seeing what shenanigans are going to go down next.

All I've gotta say is Nana D is my favorite character, hands down! She's freaking awesome, and I wish I had a funny grandmother like her! Kind of reminds me a bit of Thelma from Mama's Family, but awesomer and more hilarious! And that's hard to top!!

As with book one, Kellan faces drama and mystery! I was flying through the pages wanting to know what was going to happen with Kellan's family life and with the investigation. There was great characterization, addictive writing, and a wonderfully developed mystery! By the time I got to the last page, I was like nooooooooo! I have to know what happens next! Can't wait for book three!

Edit: 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

So, Wow, I was back again in Braxton picking up where I left off at the end of a cliffhanger of a surprise —-like a smack to the face. But yes, it felt great to be back. Before you know it, things are happening with one of Nana D’s friends and of course, Nana D is putting Kellan right in the middle of it. Luckily, Kellan is good at being nosy and sometimes a good eavesdropper. Sometimes, though, poor Kellan. Sometimes I don’t envy where he ends up. Sometimes it seems he can’t catch a break. But, it can be amusing, I must say. Poor guy. He’s got so much more to figure out than he did in the last book.
I love these cozies. I love and smirk at the characters. One character is truly on par with Umbridge for those of you that are HP fans.
These come from the heart ❤️ and I can’t help but adore them. I want them to continue!

In this one, Kellan is voluntold for quite a few things, a few of which he solves and a few of which only manage to get more complicated as the end smacks the reader in the face again. So I’m going oh, J! Let’s get #3 going!!!
Yep officially addicted.

That’s two authors now starting w J good with the cliffhangers and making me wait on a series.

I have read a couple of the author’s books and I must say he is getting better and better at his craft. I do believe that James J. Cudney has the potential to become a household name for those who enjoy light-hearted murder mysteries. “Broken Heart Attack” is the second book in the “Braxton Campus Mysteries.” However, “Heart Attack” can be read as a stand-alone book. One needn’t read the first novel, “Academic Curveball,” to follow along. The author smoothly informs us that the protagonist, Kellan, is a young widow and a single dad. (I would love to write more about his marriage because it has such a good twist, but that would be a spoiler). In book one, he was working as a writer for a murder mystery TV series until he became an amateur sleuth at Braxton College. He finds a dead body on campus and uses his writing expertise to help solve the crime.

In book number two, Kellan is now working as a professor at the college. I am happy to report that the characters of his spunky, ringleader-like grandmother, as well as his spunky and sweet young daughter, remain in the series. Kellan’s young daughter has a larger piece of the writing pie than she did previously. The father/daughter relationship is easy on the reader’s eyes. This reviewer hopes it will be continued even further in book number three. Personally, I would like to see more of Kellan’s family dynamics and issues into the story. (I actually thought this in “Curveball” as well). The reader will find tantalizing family dynamics, issues, and major drama, in the characters that make up the Paddington clan. The possible murder in “Heart Attack” occurred during a play’s dress rehearsal. Kellan is there along with, Nana D. (the grandmother) and her friends the Paddington sisters-in-law. It is here that one of his grandmother’s friends dies of a suspicious heart attack. Nana D. suspects her friend was actually murdered by a poison that caused the heart attack. So, Kellan is once more back into the crime-solving business.

As in book number one, the story is told in the first person by our professor. Also, once again the writing is at a top-notch comical level with the character of Nana D. When she doesn’t get her way with Kellan she is prone to say things like, “I won’t disown you, but I will set you up with every available harebrained girl in town. I’ll have you fending off more cougars…,” and so on and so forth. This is to her grandson who she adores. One doesn’t mess with Nana D. And yes, once again the novel ends with a cliffhanger leaving you wanting to ask Cudney when number three will be released.

I am not your typical cozy mystery reader because I am not usually a fan of the genre. But, I do make a few exceptions as with “Curveball.” This whodunit borders on the tradition of an Agatha Christie read. At times, the author (who is a friend of mine), doesn’t trust his own talent and tends to explain the plot to his readers especially when writing about potential killers. But, heck I just said something similar in another review about a book written by the enormously talented and accomplished author, Barbara Kingsolver. So Jay, aka James J. Cudney, is in very good company. I do want to add that although “Heart Attack” can be read alone, you would be missing all the fun by skipping the first book in the series.

I received this novel from the author at no cost in exchange for an honest review.

Kellan Ayrwick dropped into the Braxton Campus in book 1, thanks to his father, the ex-President of the College and then he was pulled into the
murder investigation of dead colleagues.

This book saw him
amongst the wealthy and esteemed Paddingtons who were friends with Nana D, a loving but sassy octogenarian whose sarcasm livened up the entire book.

Coming back to Kellan, in this tale, he didn’t fall into the body, the dead body fell on to his shoulder and he had to get to the truth.
James J Cudney is a careful author here who knows how to get a mystery going. He brought in suspicious characters who made up the Paddington family, some friends of Nana D, then he brought in Kellan Ayrwick’s awful, scary in-laws, the Castiglianos, and the not so dead wife Francesca, lastly James brought in family, to liven up the entire plot.

The plot twisted down so many roads, all these characters were doubt-worthy. Any one of them could have popped the old lady. The author then decided this was all too mild a story, so he brought in Sheriff April Montague. In this book, it was nice to see Kellan working with her instead of brandishing fighting words.

I read the entire book with a great fervor in one sitting, and I was aghast when the murderer was revealed. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“So full of artless jealousy is guilt, It spills itself in fearing to be spilt.” —Hamlet

I have to admit here James J Cudney is quite a brilliant author
who knows how to tie all loose ends and bring the tale to an unexpected jaw-dropping ending.

“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”— Twelfth Night

Well recommended murder mystery!!

It was a cozy, murder mystery, revolved around main character Kellan and another murder at Braxton Campus. Book was about greed, betrayal, and family drama.

Characters-

Kellan was the brilliant one in the book. I liked him more than the first book. We get to know him on personal level as father and as a husband, son, grandson, son-in-law, friend and a human as well. He did his best in all those relationships. I couldn’t imagine myself so patient with this kind of in-laws and after knowing what they have done, just forget about it. I felt bad for what his wife did to him and I could understand his feelings. It was big and tough decision from his part. I liked he kept his cool until it was over the head situation. He was astute, funnier, one level up in sarcasm and a great person. And I would love to know him more in next book of the series.

Nana D was just amazing. That old lady was hilarious. She made me laugh throughout the book. At her 70 she had kept her life livelier than 20s that gave the book fresh and young feel. Emma, Kellan’s daughter, was most lovable character. I think I like sheriff now. A lady always frustrating and angry around Kellan surprisingly started to melt a little. We got to see new light side of her. Myriam was another vicious lady never missed an opportunity to berate Kellan. As he said in book he was surrounded by all sassy women whom he only could manage.

What I liked-

Plot was real interesting. The dead returns from the grave, In-laws threatening to return back to LA, Sherriff of the county is angry for his nosy involvement in the case. Nana D’s new obsession apart from finding partner for Kellan- run for mayoral race, she and her septuagenarian friend persuading him to solve the complicated case of their friend, new boss at campus has risen the level of vicious remarks… Things were real complicated in Kellan’s life.

Author has nicely switched to the other wing of the Braxton Academy. In first book Academic Curveball, the mystery was surrounding Grey sports complex, this time its surrounding the play house.

Book was first person narrative from witty perspective of Kellan with flawless writing, engaging mystery, and complex family dynamics. The setting was the same Wharton Country, Pennsylvania but there was some more details added to it by describing Paddigton mansion, rehab facility, general hospital, and running tracks on its beautiful landscape.

There were many characters and all were creative and described with utmost detail. I never got confused with who was who and I loved to have close look to all of them.

Penddington family dynamic was more complex than the murder mystery. Every member of the family were vile, mean, always-at-each-other’s-throat type with anger management issue, leaving just few sane people. Apart from getting to know Peddingtons, we get to know more about Francesca and Castigliano family– how Francesca died, how her relationship was with Kellan, how sudden turn in Kellan’s life would affect his future and his awkward relation with his ex-girlfriend Maggie.

I liked how all things were surrounded with the case and Kellan’s life and the way Kellan handled. It was most amusing to read Kellan and Sheriff’s banter and their slowly growing friendship. I’m looking forward to read this entertaining partnership in solving the cases. Two complicated love triangles are still a mystery that hopefully would sort out in the next book.

Suspense and mystery had a strong hold. I couldn’t guess who was the murderer until revelation. All characters related to Gwendolyn were suspect and they all had bad history with Gwendolyn that made things difficult.

Climax was engaging. I was curious to see how they are going to catch killer and how other members are going to react with unexpected turn. The end was- hilarious, of course because of Nana D; was satisfactory in terms of how Kellan and sheriff finally could get along, he made right decisions about Castigliano and his support to his sister; and also shocking because of what his mother-in-law said on phone call.

This series is getting more exciting.

Overall, it was engaging cozy mystery with creative and amusing character. I recommend to go in order to enjoy it fullest.

A Wonderful Small-town Mystery

Although this book has elements of a cozy mystery (I.e. amateur sleuths, small town setting, quirky/eccentric characters), there is more of a contemporary mystery feel to it. In this outing of The Braxton Campus Mysteries, Kellan is recruited by Nana D. And her friend Eustacia Paddington to find out who killed Gwendolyn Paddington. I will say Kellan has more patience than I do. The Paddington family is full of spoiled, rude, greedy and secretive people who tried their best to get rid of Kellan's interference. Throw in other snarky females (his boss Myriam, the sheriff April, and Nana D.) and it is a wonder he doesn't hate women. Do not give up hope, his sister Eleanore and friend Maggie, are understanding and supportive and by the end of the book, even the sheriff comes around. While trying to solve the mystery, Kellan is dealing with all the changes in his personal life, things at work and running Nana D's mayoral campaign.

This is a very character driven story with characters that are being developed more in each book. The main characters are also becoming more likeable which I am happy about. The mystery was a good one with clues being dropped throughout the book, but also several red herrings. I thought I had it all figured out, then something else was revealed to lead me in another direction. As the reveal occured, I followed along shaking my head, thinking, "of course, why didn't I think of that." The dialogue was crisp, snarky in many cases, and revealed so much about the characters. Emma, Kellan's 6 year old daughter is adorable. She is sweet, mature and can also give the attitude (I think Nana D is rubbing off on her). I am looking forward to the next book in this series to find out what happens next in Kellan's life as well as picking up on those few situations that popped up at the end of the book. If you enjoy a mystery with some cozy elements, pick up this series and delve into life at Braxton College and town.

When Kellan Ayrwick attends a dress rehearsal of King Lear with Nana D. and her friends, he expects the deaths to stay on stage. But not too long into the second act, he realizes that Gwendolyn Paddington isn’t asleep on his shoulder, but she’s passed away. Gwendolyn had been saying someone in her family was trying to kill her. Is that true? If so, can Kellan figure out who did it?

When you have a book with characters as dysfunctional as the Paddington family, it always makes me appreciate my own family. But it also makes for a great mystery plot, and that’s the case again here. There are plenty of twists along the way to catching the killer at the end. While some of the characters can be over the top, we care about enough of them, including Kellan, to keep us invested in the book. I did feel like the humor was hit and miss for me here. Sometimes, the character’s teasing worked, and other times it felt like they were picking on Kellan more than actually teasing him. Unfortunately, there were some timeline issues and a red herring that felt like it jumped quite a bit. Both could have been resolved with a good editor. There are several sub-plots involving Kellan and his family. While they veered a little more into soap opera territory than is typical for the books I read, they have me hooked and I can’t wait to make time for the next book to find out what happens.

What a great read! James J. Cudney is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.
He knows how to build a plot and make it complex to the point where the reader is wondering how the heck things are going to tie at the end.
Kellan has so much going on in this book, I felt sorry for him. Between his Nana, another murder, his job, the sheriff, and ghosts from the past, I wanted to reach out and give him a hug. Poor thing!
But the marathon kept me engaged, annoyed every time I had to stop reading to check on something.
As usual, there are the funny moments balanced in with the more serious ones, mostly with Kellan trying to keep his Nana out of trouble – and waking with a hangover later. But just when you think the old lady is cruel, she makes up for it.
I don’t find myself reading many murder mysteries, but this one’s got a touch of everything, intrigue, humor, compassion, some detective work – to name but a few.
I enjoyed this read as much as the other books I read by this author, but this time, with the character growth and the hints of things to come, I was left with some book hangover of my own!
I can't wait to pick up the next book and see what other mess life has in store for Kellan!
Lovers of cozy mysteries with some sleuthing and humor, this one is for you!

Broken Heart Attack, by James J. Cudney, could be called a cozy mystery. Could be, but there's nothing comfy about it. The second book in the series, Braxton Campus Mysteries, is the story of solving a murder to one of Braxton's oldest families, the Paddingtons. Newly returned to his home town, Kellan Ayrwick is roped into investigating who might have been the culprit by his grandmother, Nana D, who is a most curmudgeonly character, and a lot of fun. The possibilities are endless since each member of the privileged Paddington family has motive and opportunity. A a swirl of other twists and turns surrounds Kellan, including the reappearance of his formerly dead wife. Nice twist there. I can honestly say that although the clues were there, I never guessed who the killer was. Well written, enjoyable characters, and a story that will test your detective skills, I'm looking forward to the next one. I think you will too.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy to read in exchange for my honest review.

This is the second book in the Braxton Campus Mysteries series and once again I loved it. I am just going to call it right now, I am going to love everything this man writes.

Nana D is still my favorite but she has some competition in this book in the form of a 6 year old. Kellan’s daughter Emma is just as feisty and sarcastic as her dad and grandmother. I absolutely adore the relationship between Kellan and Emma.

As with book one there is loads of drama but I feel like that was upped in this book. There of course is the murder mystery which Kellan once again finds himself in the middle of the investigation and then there is some family issues he is dealing with which if you read the first book you know what I am talking about. I was looking forward to exploring the family issues more in this book unfortunately the main focus was on the murder mystery which isn’t a bad thing I just really wanted to explore that a little more.

There was a lot more characters most of which weren’t likeable at least not to me. I was so annoyed with so many of the characters because I just don’t understand how people can act the way they do sometimes. I am fully aware this is only a book but I have encountered people like the characters in this book in real like and it just makes me mad.

Once again James has left us with a cliffhanger that leads us into the next book. Sometimes I think he does this on purpose just to annoy me because he knows how much I hate cliffhangers. Just kidding Jay!! I am once again impatiently waiting for the next book.

This book is fast paced and full of twists you want see coming and I doubt you will be able to guess the killer. I know I had no clue who it was until the very end.

Have you already read one or both books from Braxton Campus Mysteries? If not, this is a good moment because James J. Cudney is about to release the third book from the series!

After finding a dead body on campus in Academic Curveball, the main protagonist of the series Kellan has the opportunity to solve a sudden death mystery in the second book Broken Heart Attack which happens during the King Lear play’s dress rehearsal. His grandmother’s friend succumbs to a suspicious heart attack, and Kellan and Nana D are ready to solve a possible crime.

This is a cozy mystery that will make you love it, not only because of its intrigue, strongly characterized and entertaining protagonists and another masterful cliffhanger, but also because of the genuine humour that keeps forcing the hearty laughter out of you. Nana D rocks even more than in Academic Curveball, and her relationship with her grandson Kellan is a pure fun and entertainment.

Broken Heart Attack is another book in which James J. Cudney proves himself as intelligent, skilful and humorous author ready to push boundaries. I have no doubt his third book Flower Power Trip from Braxton Campus Mysteries will be yet another success in the series.

Broken Heart Attack (Braxton Campus Mysteries, Book 2)

When Gwendolyn Paddington dies during the second rehearsal act of King Lear, Nana D asks Kellan to investigate the death. Kellan questions the Paddington family members. He even questions Arthur Terry, the Production Director of the King Lear play. Gwendolyn told Nana D that she believed someone in her family was trying to kill her. Could she have been murdered because she was going to disinherit or evict some of her family? There are plenty of suspects and unanswered questions.

In the meantime, Kellan has to deal with the Castigliano family, his dead wife's family. He finds a connection between the Castigliano family and one other wealth family, but all is not what it seems. Can Kellan stand up to his in-laws, ensuring his daughter's protection?

Despite this cozy mystery being well written, entertaining and suspenseful, I found I could put it on hold and pursue other books. When I picked it back up, it was easy to immerse myself back into the story. The culprit was a surprise. The next tidbit of information has me wondering how it will all play out. I recommend this book to cozy mystery readers, and I look forward to the next novel in the series.

The second book of this series is even better than the first! Kellan gets drawn into another mystery when a wealthy theater patron dies under mysterious circumstances. The characters in this family are outrageous... and his own family is quite the interesting bunch. Especially the inlaws... wow!

As with the last one, it brings a fresh perspective to have this in first person from a male protagonist, something not usually found in the cozy genre. Nana D is back and feistier than ever. And little Emma? A tiny Nana D in the making. Heaven help us all. :)

I figured out "who done it" only about a page and a half before Kellan did. But the mystery character who shows up at the very end? Didn't see that one coming AT ALL... another great twist. I hope James continues this series for several more books, as I think there's a LOT to unpack and explore in Braxton.

The second installment of Braxton Campus mysteries finds Kellan AyrwIck accepting a teaching job at Braxton College. He is still reeling from the fact his wife, Francesca is still alive. Nany D is running for mayor of the town. Against his better judgment, he is involved with the Paddington family problems. He has agreed to explore the death of Gwendolyn Paddington. This takes him a fast pace to understand the affairs of the family. It had me turning the pages as fast as I wanted to know what was happening. I highly recommend this book and series. I am looking forward to the next book.

Broken Heart Attack happens right after the events of book 1 (Academic Curveball). In the previous book, Kellan accidentally became a detective when he solved a murder in Braxton before the police. In this book, once again, he’s thrown to playing detective and crime solver. This time, a murder of someone close to him – one of her Nana D’s friends. And in this book, he’s also dealing with the truth about his wife that he learned in the previous book.

First of all, let me admit that I haven’t read any other cozy mystery prior to reading this author’s works. In fact, I wasn’t even sure what exactly ‘cozy mystery’ means. I mean how can a mystery novel be cozy? Lol. Sometimes I can be really ignorant like this. Hehe. But anyway, I’m thankful that James Cudney’s books are the first cozy mysteries I’ve ever read. Because I really enjoyed them. Obviously. Another admission though, I didn’t get to review Book 1 of this series and I think it’s a bit late for me to do now. But at least I’m now giving you my review of book 2.

This is such an easy read that made me think I’d be reading too many coz mysteries in the future. I just love how smooth the storyline went. Like the story is giving me the time or chance to enjoy every moment of the story. Not only that, the mystery kept me invested till the end. It knows just what to reveal and how is enough revelation every part of the story needs to make me keep swiping my tablet (it’s where I read it ’cause I still haven’t bought a new kindle and only have the kindle app) and solve the murder with Kellan. And speaking of the murder, the crime seemed so carefully woven for my enjoyment even though it involves death. I also like the side stories included in the plot, regarding Kellan’s personal life, family and work. They made my heart goes to Kellan and really care for him. In short, the side stories made me more invested in Kellan’s character.

Kellan is the kind of character you would want to hang out with. He’s such a goofy, humorous guy who is also really nice. That makes him a cool person. I really enjoyed solving crimes with him. I also love the side characters even the new ones that are introduced in this book. All of them easily fit in the story. I especially loved Nana D and her friends. I really laughed hard when I first met the members of the Septuagenarian Club.

So overall, I highly recommend this book. Especially if you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, this book is a must-read along with all other books in the series. Reading the first two books now made me more excited to read the next ones because I’m curious as to what Kellan would get himself into in Braxton. Though actually, I have an idea about book 3 because I was a part of its blog tour when it came out earlier this year.

And oh I almost forgot. I freakin’ love the titles of the books in this series. They’re simply brilliant and too cool. And as an aspiring author myself, I’m a little envious at James’ creativity. I mean, for me, titling, finding the right title that fits perfectly to my book is one of the hardest part. Hehe.

Broken Heart Attack is the second book in James Cudney’s Braxton Campus Mysteries. Just as the first, I love Mr. Cudney’s COZY MYSTERY true to the genre with MURDER, MYSTERY, and a HUMOROUS SLEUTH. Again, KELLAN finds himself involved in another Braxton campus crime, a murder revolving around the affluent PADDINGTON FAMILY. GWENDOLYN Paddington, the matriarch of this dysfunctional clan and close friend of Kellan’s grandmother, NANA D. dies on Kellan’s shoulder in the middle of a King Lear production. How crafty of Mr. Cudney to use Shakespeare’s King Lear as the play where death befalls the murder victim. Just as in King Lear, Broken Heart Attack revolves around the victim’s last will and testament and the clashing family heirs.

Gwendolyn knew her life was in danger. Who wanted her dead?

Suspicions surround the family when Gwendolyn’s will goes missing. As usual, Kellan disregards the local Sheriff, April Montague’s, warnings to stay out of her investigation. Hard-headedly, Kellan insinuates himself into the Paddington family, investigates each member’s MOTIVE for murder, uncovering years of animosities and infidelity from the past that threatens the family’s foundation. Who was clever and hateful enough to murder her with a lethal dose of cocaine-infused medication, and why? Was it Brad, THE NURSE, Millard her HUSBAND, Ophelia her DAUGHTER, Richard her SON-IN-LAW or one of the GRANDCHILDREN?

With the help of his wise-cracking Nana D., now running for town mayor, Kellan powers on, budding into the Paddington family’s past and present history until he uncovers the killer.

But some days Kellan’s had just about enough of older women bossing him around.

“There are days when I want to pack myself in a box and ship it anywhere but Braxton for another forty years. It's almost like once people turned seventy, they decided it's their right to do and say whatever they wanted... Why couldn't I have stayed back in Los Angeles? Oh right, the Castiglianos… I was surrounded by sassy women who liked to torture me.”

Kellan’s personal life is fraught with uncertainties when his supposedly dead wife, Francesca, resurfaces, still insistent on remaining in his life. The dangerous Castiglianos, his wife’s family, is more of a threat than Kellan realizes. Just when Kellan believes his life is resuming some normalcy, he stumbles on another secret, this time involving his brother. Will Kellan ever find peace. Highly unlike with another looming drama involving his wife. Will Kellan ever break free of his wife? Does he want to?

Mr. Cudney’s, lovable and humorous sleuth and his relationship with Nana D. always makes me laugh. I enjoy the banter between these two and Kellan’s dangerous capers keep me turning pages as if I’m right with him in solving the mystery. Broken Heart Attack is WELL WRITTEN, SUSPENSEFUL, and a PAGE-TURNER that kept me GUESSING to the end. I highly recommend this novel to those who love a cozy mystery or those looking for a good read. Thank you, Mr. Cudney, for the laughs, thrills, suspense, and great read!

Summary:

Braxton Hall is gearing up for the drama of the year- and I don't just mean their production of King Lear!  Kellen is still getting used to being back home and working under a woman that obviously hates him and his family.  Emma has finally come down to be with him and he loves having his little girl, but she was delivered with a lot of unanswerable questions.  There are things in his past that could affect the future- and not all of them are willing to stay put in the past.  Then there's Nana D- it isn't enough that the outspoken senior is running for mayor, she also wants Kellen involved in the life of one of her friends Gwen.  The two are sure that there's something fishy going on- Gwen's family is trying to kill her!  Before he even has time to process this news, she's dead and Nana D wants him on the case- regardless of the fact that he reminds everyone he isn't a detective.  Could someone have seriously harmed an old woman, and why?  Suspects- and motives- abound, but can Kellen solve the mystery before his past catches up to him or the sheriff strangles him?

My thoughts:

I could have sworn I did this review a week ago- sorry guys!  I read this a bit ago and loved it.  It has the great dialogue and character development I loved from the first one, and we are slowly watching each character grow.  Kellen is an interesting character, and I love watching him with Nana D and Emma.  The plot of this one was interesting and the book had a nice flow to it.  It's one of those quick, fun reads that make me love this genre.  You know the ones- you find yourself turning page after page long after you should be asleep simply because you aren't ready to let go.  Even with the weighty topics here (there has, after all, been a murder), there's a good dose of sass and sarcasm I love.  I can easily see this as being a series that I will be reaching for often- I am already praying there's a book three in the making, and you can bet I will be pre-ordering it.  For me this is a five star book- I highly recommend it.

On the adult content side, there's some language and violence but it's fairly tame.  I think that's one of the things I loved about this one- like Ellery Adam's books, Cudney doesn't rely on sexual drama or shock value to sell books.  There's romantic interest, but it's not hyped up or thrown all over the place (this is an issue I often have with Janet Evanovich's books and why I am still on the fence about the new Stephanie Plum book).  I would give this one a two.

ANOTHER TRIUMPH!! The laughs and shock continue with this installment in the Braxton Campus Mystery Series!

It makes me so happy to see the continued growth in all of my favourite characters. Will Kellan ever find love?

“”Does that mean you have a love life to speak of? Because last time we chatted, your ability to flirt and any awkward sex appeal you still clung to had disappeared the way of the pony express,” she replied while kissing her finger, touching her deriere, and making a sizzle sound.”

Will Nana D find her political footing?

“Don’t we need to start preparing for your debate with Councilman Silly Man on Thursday?”

And, of course she keeps her token Nana D style,

“”We’re as confused as a fart in a fan factory on a humid day.”

The woman always has me in stitches!!

The mystery had me guessing at every turn with James bringing forth many plausible villains. The best thing is that I found myself hoping that most of these “villains” would pull through and turn out to be innocent! James made you feel for all of these characters, and…. OH, THE SECRETS!! Be prepared for some MIND BLOWING revelations! I can’t wait to continue and see what will happen next.

Here we continue following the story and journey of Kellan Ayrwick as he transitions from LA family man to Pennsylvania family man as well as a professor/transition facilitator at Braxton College. He once again finds himself involved in a mystery when one of his grandmother's friends dies during a theatre performance. Kellan's grandmother - the irrepressible Nana D. - asks Kellan to investigate and find out what really happened to Gwendolyn. He agrees, while trying to stay out of the way of both the disagreeable sheriff and his partner/boss at Braxton, Dr. Myriam Castle.

Kellan's personal life is expanded much more in this book and we finally get to meet more of his family. Also in the mix is the continuation of the little wrinkle that is introduced at the end of the first book. Mr. Cudney's writing is on-point here, which makes it a very interesting, heartbreaking, funny, and compelling read. I have very much enjoyed both Braxton books in this series so far and greatly anticipate getting to read the third book next year.

An excellent mystery by an excellent writer! We have some of the terrific characters back from the first book with an addition of an extra story in the background. People die and come back from the dead in mysterious circumstances.
Our hero is drawn into the drama on the stage and off the stage. And this time its not just his Nana pulling him in. Her friends pull on him, too. Meanwhile his personal life is in an uproar.
I'm trying to not give too much away while still letting you know how exciting this book is! You'll just have to read it...and then you can agree.

I must confess that I'm not typically a fan of "cozy" mysteries; I like mine gritty! But I am a huge fan of James after reading his first two novels so of course I was going to read this series! And of course I loved them! The characters are quirky and lovable: who doesn't love sweet little Emma with her childish honesty, protagonist Kellen with his acerbic wit, and Nana D with her curmudgeon-like personality--who may just serve you one too many margaritas if you cross her! The novels have a great cast of characters, a mystery you'll never guess, family secrets, lies, small town politics, love triangles, family turmoil. Simply put--what's not to love? So thank you James and get to work on number three please!

Kellan Ayrwick’s Unexpected Life

This second story flows smoothly from Academic Curveball, the first book in the series. When I began reading I felt the lives of the characters flowed smoothly, as if I had just finished reading the first book. Broken Heart Attack is a new story and another contorted plot that kept me guessing.

The author has created characters that stand out from one another, each with strong personalities. Besides Kellan’s non-assuming personality, my favorites are the Deputy and Nana D, partly because they are so spunky. But each character plays a vital role and not one seems like a movie extra. Even those characters with minor appearances serve to push the story forward. We get to know each character by the subtle descriptions Cudney smoothly drops into the narration. Individual personalities are confirmed in their strong dialogues and Cudney is a master of dialogue.

Kellan Ayrwick is a young man who finds himself caught up in another murder investigation that is just too close to home. This story reads swiftly and the action keeps rolling. Though you’d never know it from the twist and turns, everything ties up neatly - but not without some shocking events that lead to another of Cudney’s breathtaking cliffhangers.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the Braxton Campus Mysteries series and had a great time with book two. When elderly Gwendolyn Paddington dies from an overdose of cocaine in the middle of a King Lear performance, Kellan determines to find out why. Gwendolyn’s sister-in-law, Eustacia, is behind the unofficial investigation, and the rest of the wealthy family become suspects from top to bottom. Kellan’s search for the truth isn’t easy. There’s a missing will and he has to be careful of stepping on the touchy sheriff’s toes.

There are a lot of red herrings in the story as Gwendolyn’s extended family is full of morally flawed potential murderers. Few of them are likeable, but they’re entertaining and have distinct personalities. A feisty favorite from book one, Nana D is back. She’s meddling (as usual), and running for mayor, and she provides some wonderful humor and banter to the read. Her relationship with Kellan is a delight.

The pace moves along quickly, and I didn’t know until the end who the murderer was. This book can easily be read as a stand-alone, and I recommend it to fans of cozy murder mysteries. I look forward to the next in the series.

Broken heart attack is the second book in James J. Cudney's successful Braxton Campus Mysteries series.

In this book we are immediately drawn back into Kellan's world in the introductory scenes where he has agreed to assist his feisty and determined grandmother, Nana D, in running for mayor and is trying to rally her team of elderly friends into constructively assisting with her campaign. Nana D is quick to notice that her friend Gwendolyn Paddington, matriarch of the extremely wealthy Paddington family, is unwell and at loggerheads with her selfish and uncaring descendants. After accidentally overhearing Gwendolyn engaged in a telephonic conversation with an unknown family member, Kellan agrees to investigate the strange circumstances surrounding Gwendolyn's ill-health on behalf of Nana D.

We are quickly reminded about the death of Kellan's wife and his life as a single parent to their daughter who has quickly settled into her new life in the way that only very young children can. His struggles with his "boss" at the Braxton Campus faculty where he works as a lecturer are re-introduced creating a lot of sympathy in the reader for Kellan, who is a really nice chap and the kind of man everyone should like. James Cudney is, in my opinion, excellent at creating believable characters which the reader really cares about.

When Gwendolyn unexpectedly dies at a theatre performance, following a public argument with her estranged son during the interval, Kellan is swept into the investigation into the unnatural circumstances surrounding her death. Who could be responsible? One of her spoiled children, all of whom have failed in areas of their lives and need money as a result? One of her selfish grandchildren, who seem to actively dislike her? Or could it be her male nurse who has a history of his own? Kellan throws himself into discovering the true facts of her death, while avoiding conflict with the town's female sheriff, who does not like any competition, especially from Kellan, and unexpected and unsettling confrontations with his dead wife's mother.

This is an exciting and fast past murder mystery with believable and interesting characters which will keep you flipping pages until the thoroughly satisfying ending. Luckily, there is another four books already available in this series so you don't have to wait to dive back into the world of Braxton Campus.

Cudney’s smooth, readable style scooped me up and swiftly drew me back into life on Braxton campus. While you might initially flounder slightly if you hadn’t had the pleasure of reading Academic Curveball, Cudney ensures you’ll soon make sense of what is going on – and indeed, there’s plenty to keep poor Kellen on the back foot.

His main relationship is with his feisty, sharp-tongued grandmother, Nana D. I really like the intergenerational dynamic within the story. Kellen’s grandmother isn’t introduced just to give us a few smiles at his expense as her snarky replies leaves him waving in the wind, Nana D is important to the story as a character in her own right. I also like the fact that the victim is one of her elderly friends – and that her death is investigated with the same rigour as the hapless youngster in the previous book. Far too much casual ageism is exhibited within this genre, so encountering Cudney’s take on the older characters in his story is refreshing change.

The mystery is nicely twisty, with plenty of potential suspects. I also liked the character development moving forward through the series – while the Sheriff was extremely hostile towards Kellen’s involvement in the previous book, she becomes less so during this investigation, as Kellen proves his worth and gains her rather grudging trust. Once more, Cudney’s skill in handling the whodunit is apparent, while I had a couple of candidates in mind for the wicked deed – neither of them were responsible and yet the culprit had a solid motive.

Any niggles? Well, I was floored by the revelation at the end of the first book and very eager to find out exactly what had happened – to the extent of skimming the first few pages to discover the outcome. If I have a grizzle, it would be that this major plotpoint was slightly squeezed out of the story at the expense of the investigation. So I’m hoping the next book will put Kellen’s personal issues right in the centre of the story, because I’m very keen to see him finally face up to that cauldron of regret, anger and thwarted love…

This is the second installment in the Braxton Campus mystery series. I read them both back to back and enjoyed getting know more about the protagonist Kellen from his POV, his young daughter Emma and his loveable but quite eccentric grandmother Nana D. The characters in this story include the members of the Paddington family, many of whom are completely unlikable! But one, Gwendolyn, is a long time friend of Nana D. When Gwendolyn complains of feeling ill and subsequently dies of a heart attack, Nana D suspects someone in the family of being responsible and enlists Kellen to find out what happened. Many red herrings later and with the sherriff April and Kellen finally working together, the culprit is brought to light.

My only criticism is that each of the first books ends on a cliffhanger. I understand why authors use this technique but I always feel manipulated (even when it works!).

Cozy mystery with unique and charming characters.

“Broken Heart Attack” is the second book in the “Braxton Campus Mysteries” series, which at this moment contain four books, but can be all read as standalone.

The course of events got me interested from the very beginning. Kellan, the main character, is easily lifelike. He seems to be a really cool guy, friendly, polite, thoughtful, smart and funny. I loved the type of relationship Kellan has with his grandmother. Nana D is quite the character, definitely not like the majority of people her age. She is in her seventies and planning to run for mayor. When her friend Gwendolyn dies during the King Lear play, and the suspicious cause of death is born, Nana D. is the one insisting Kellan to help find the murderer. “The things I did for my family were getting way too weird.”- says Kellan.

With intertwining stories and events, the mystery is evolving. The road is not easy. Kellan has to deal with the Paddington clan. Sheriff April doesn't seem to be on his side but this will not stop him on his mission. Luckily, he is good at being nosy and sometimes a good eavesdropper. Sometimes it seems he can’t catch a break. He has to deal with drama around the family of his no longer present wife. I would love to say more but I am afraid it may be a spoiler. However, Kellan’s daughter is sweet and smart. Luckily, Kellan has his parents, grandmother and sister around that help him baby sit while he’s busy with lots of stuff. He is not only working on the case finding out who the murderer is, but he is dealing with his private drama, helping for Nana’s mayoral campaign, he is being a great supporter for his sister, and he is trying to have some social life between his daily job and all the other interests and obligations.

This mystery had me on my toes, kept me swaying between the suspects almost till the very end. Through details, settings, and the most lovable characters the reader will fall instantly in love with this book. I will be looking for the others in this series to see what is Kellan up to.
