Connecting Mini-Generation

Mini-Generation is the term which applies when an electricity customer installs inverter connected generation, within the range covered in the definition below, at a premises for the purpose of producing electricity. These generators are generally installed to locally produce clean electricity  primarily for self-consumption, thus reducing the need and cost of purchasing electricity. Mini-Generation allows customers to take action to address the issues of climate change, rising electricity prices and reliance on fossil fuels on our journey to a clean electric future together.

Mini-Generation is designed to operate in parallel with the electricity network and is defined as a source of inverter connected electrical energy, and all associated electrical equipment, in the range as follows:

  • 25 amperes (6kVA) to 72 amperes (17kVA), when the connection is single-phase

  • 16 amperes (11kVA) to 72 amperes (50kVA), when the connection is three-phase

Mini-Generation Pilot Scheme

ESB Networks are delighted to announce that we will be extending the Mini-Generation Pilot Scheme. We are now accepting additional applications commencing 1st July 2022.

This is due to the huge level of customer interest and overall positive reaction to the new streamlined Mini-Generation (NC7) connection process and will include an additional 500 applications.

We will continue to take learnings and feedback from the full remit of the pilot period, while continuing to enable more customers to safely connect their renewable generation to the electricity system.

Note:

If you wish to connect a generator with an output greater than that for Mini-Generation, go to Connect a Renewable and Embedded Generator or Connecting Small Scale Generation. If you wish to connect a generator with an output less than that for Mini-Generation, go to Connect a Micro-Generator.

Step-by-step Guide

Important:

Do not install Mini-Generation unless you have signed and returned the associated Connection Agreement. No works shall progress until the conditions in the Connection Agreement have been met and any ESB Networks construction work has been completed.
