about

The research group ‘Online Selves - Self Online’ (OSSO) is co-founded by Sofia Rüdiger and Daria Dayter. The group brings together researchers in the fields of linguistics and communication studies who study various aspects of identity construction and self-presentation in online environments. Our areas of interest include all facets of identity construction online, incl. self-promotion and (im)politeness on Twitter; manipulative discourse in online dating; linguistic affect, intimacy and distance in online food shows; and persuasive language on social media.


aims and activities

Our aim is to coordinate short-term projects with tangible outputs among the members of the network, giving the earlier career researchers an opportunity to spearhead a project as a PI. The role of the PI is assigned on a rolling basis to the members of the network depending on the current projects and the required expertise.

Here are some of the projects and events we organise:

  • A lecture series “Online Selves - Self Online”, hosted by the Tampere University. Currently scheduled lectures include talks by Sofie Decock (Ghent University), Thomas C.   • An OSSO thematic panel at the conference “Influence. Manipulation. Seduction. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Persuasive Language” 18-19 November 2022 (hosted by the University of Bayreuth)
