Date: 09/10/2014

To celebrate World Egg Day, Bord Bia is encouraging Irish consumers to try one of its tasty egg-based recipes for lunch or dinner using Bord Bia Quality Assured eggs.

According to a recent Bord Bia study, over 85% of adults in Ireland enjoy eggs at least once a week, with 56% of men and 47% of women eating eggs two to three times per week. Of the 1,008 adults surveyed, the research showed that over a third (35%) consume eggs for lunch and 34% like to enjoy eggs as part of their evening meal.

Teresa Brophy, Consumer and Trade Marketing Manager at Bord Bia said, “Eggs form part of a healthy diet; they are versatile, don't take long to cook and are great value. With just a few eggs you can prepare a feast of family favourites.  It is no wonder that egg sales have risen by 6% in the last year to €98 million as shoppers buy eggs more often and buy on average ten eggs per shopping trip.”

What do your eggs say about you?

Whether it’s fried, poached, scrambled or boiled, the way we eat our eggs can reveal a lot about our character! A study carried out in the UK revealed common personality traits amongst those who prefer certain styles of eggs. Who knew when Dean Martin first asked “How do you like your eggs in the morning?” that such a question would reveal more than just culinary preference?!

The study found that young males are often lovers of Fried Eggs, a breakfast roll staple and family favourite. Those who opt for sunny side up tend to see the glass half full and are curious, creative and imaginative, whilst those who prefer over-easy are more likely to be shy creatures of habit.  Bord Bia’s Spicy Fried Eggs are the ideal choice for fried egg lovers.

Scrambled Egg connoisseurs tend to be loyal friends, conservative by nature and inclusive of others, all qualities that too can be credited to the glorious scrambled egg. Scrambled egg lovers generally seek a speedy meal that can be prepared with ease and are those often born first or second in the family. Bord Bia has created a delicious recipe of Creamy Scrambled Eggs with Ham, Tomatoes and Roasted Peppers which can be enjoyed by egg aficionados on World Egg Day.

The study also established that women tend to be more partial to a Boiled Egg than men. Often chosen by the health conscious, ‘hard boilers’ have a tendency to be disorganised and impulsive. Thrown on a salad nicoise, soft-boiled or hard-boiled, this style of eggs is understated and delicious, a lieutenant to its toasted soldiers; the mighty boiled egg is the preferred style for those guilty of leaving things until the last minute. Hard boilers can celebrate World Egg Day in culinary style with Bord Bia’s Smokey Paprika Chicken and Eggs Rice.

Gregarious and energetic types find taste satisfaction in perfect Poached Eggs. Often difficult to cook to perfection, poached eggs are a favourite among those who strive for personal perfection. The social butterfly of egg style, poached eggs are commonly enjoyed as part of the classic brunch dish, Eggs Benedict, or as a speedy dinner for those hitting the town for a night out. Best enjoyed with freshly buttered toast and a pop of veggie goodness, try Poached Eggs on Tomato and Mushroom Toasts.

Suitable for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the much loved Omelette is the mother-figure of the group, always comforting and resourceful, much like omelette lovers themselves. The omelette is seen as the inventor’s favourite: reliable, well-organised and self-disciplined but with plenty of room for culinary creativity. Bord Bia recommends adding some tasty mushrooms to your omelette mix to create a classic mushroom omelette.

Tasty and wholesome, the Frittata is deemed the Italian stallion of the egg world, perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner. A winner among young professionals due to its versatility and ease to make, frittatas offer a quick, healthy dinner after a busy day on the go. Celebrate World Egg Day in Ireland with the Green Frittata and Spinach Salad.
