AII Prizes, Grants and Appointments
amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, has awarded the Mathilde Krim Fellowship in Basic Biomedical Research to Dr. de Taeye, PhD at Amsterdam UMC. This Fellowship will support an innovative study harnessing the ability of antibodies to home in on cellular targets.
AII Highlights
Dr. Gringhuis' article Fungal sensing by dectin-1 directs the non-pathogenic polarization of TH17 cells through balanced type I IFN responses in human DCs’ was recently published in Nature Immunology. “Even though fungi are not considered ‘sexy’ they deserve more attention.” Dr. Sonja Gringhuis.
Dr. Klouwens and Dr. Trentelman both recently received their doctorates from the Amsterdam UMC Lyme Disease Center on their research into another form of Lyme disease prevention: vaccination. Dr. Klouwens and Dr. Trentelman designed antitick vaccines based on recombinant proteins and dna vaccines.
Nearly half of the world's population are at risk of malaria and the hunt for a vaccine continues. But, in the view of Martin Grobusch, Professor of Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, it's not the magic bullet of a vaccine that we should be waiting for but rather getting to work on a magic gun, filled with all the options that we already have.
One-third of individuals with HIV and hepatitis C are not getting treatment for their hepatitis C infection despite being eligible for it. Commencing treatment was found to be more frequent in certain countries (Australia, France, and the Netherlands) and in men who have sex with men.
Cross-continental collaboration identifies new COVID-blocking natural product. The research led by Dr. Carla Ribeiro identified Berbamine dihydrochloride as a potent inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 entry and replication in human intestinal epithelial cells.
