Mining Truck Traffic On Stevens Creek To Be Discussed This Week

The city of Cupertino and Santa Clara County are hosting two meetings slated for Wednesday and Thursday related to mining truck traffic.

CUPERTINO, CA -- Two meetings from the city and Santa Clara County related to increased truck traffic on Stevens Creek and Foothill boulevards are set this week in Cupertino and San Jose.

The city's Public Works Department will host the first meeting Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Monta Vista Community Center located at 22601 Voss Avenue in Cupertino regarding the truck traffic between the Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant and Stevens Creek Quarry.

  • Cause of increased truck traffic
  • Roles of Lehigh and Stevens Creek Quarry
  • Submission of an amended minor reclamation plan by Lehigh to County of Santa Clara Department of Planning & Development and to the California Department of Conservation (Division of Mine Reclamation)
    • Authority to proceed from county, if granted, may exceed 3 months.
    • Trucks may continue using city streets until July 2019 or longer.
  • Roles of county planning and sheriff's office
  • Roles of the state Division of Mine Reclamation
  • Roles of the city of Cupertino
  • Impacts to city and residents in terms of congestion, safety, noise, pollution and cost
  • Upcoming Santa Clara County Zoning Administration Hearing Agenda at the county Government Center located in room No. 157 on the first floor at 70 West Hedding Street. This gathering is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 17, 2019 at 9 a.m. Those interested are asked to call 408-299-5770 to confirm.

Santa Clara County Planning and sheriff’s office representatives will be in attendance. Lehigh and Stevens Creek Quarry managers have been asked to attend. County Supervisor Joe Simitian may also be there.

The second meeting slated for Thursday

The Santa Clara County Planning Commission will discuss the contentious issue Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors' Chambers on the first floor of the County Government Center located at 70 West Hedding Street in San Jose.

The agenda item involves a public hearing to consider the status of Lehigh Southwest Cement Company compliance of its agreed-upon conditions to conduct mining operations in the busy area.
