The New Jersey State Assembly Judiciary Committee today approved legislation to downgrade procession of psilocybin mushrooms, known as “magic mushrooms,” to a disorderly persons offense.
It was approved along party lines by a 4-1 vote, with one Republican abstaining.
The reclassification of the mushrooms was part of a deal agreed to on Friday by Gov. Phil Murphy and legislative leaders who signed off on the bill moving concurrently with decriminalization.
The New Jersey Globe first reported the deal to implement adult-use recreational marijuana approved by voters last month.
Assemblyman James Kennedy (D-Rahway) is the sponsor of the psilocybin mushrooms legislation.
