During Art camp an outdoor observational drawing exercise led young artists through the experience of a very intentional act of seeing to learn about perspective and angle viewing. Their bodies and minds carried out this exercise as a collective and spontaneous act of mapping their neighborhood. Children were introduced to the work and symbolism of JM Basquiat. We splashed colour on various surfaces while exploring the work of Pat Lipsky and the use of the artist’s grid. We learned about the intricate sculpting work of Ruth Asawa. Artists were encouraged to delve into the arduous process of making mobiles inspired by Asawa (we focused on process vs. product). We had a rare opportunity for a studio visit with one of our talented artist neighbors - Kelly Towles - and the children tried their hands at Graffiti making. Free and collective play, during lunch and at the playground, brought the artists’ spirits together, cultivating both creativity and friendship.
