Welcome

This is the 5th TRANSFORM-CE newsletter with news and progress of the this 3-year project, where we transform single use plastic into new valuable products for a circular economy. In this issue, you will find a review of the webinar about design & product development with recycled plastic, the Plastic Fantastic Truck Tour and an inspiring new trophy using additive manufacturing and 3D printing.

Third TRANSFORM-CE webinar: Design & Product Development with recycled plastic

On 6th October the third of a series of informational webinars took place, for Interreg NW Europe funded project, TRANSFORM-CE. In this webinar the project partners shared their knowledge, experiences and insights on design and product development with recycled plastic.

Attendees got a better understanding of TRANSFORM-CE and how the project is facilitating the recycling of single use plastics, as well as how these materials and processes could be applied within their own business. Project partner Ruth Mugge, Full Professor in Design for Sustainable Consumer Behaviour of Technische Universiteit Delft presented the seven guidelines that they developed in order to use design and marketing strategies to tackle the barriers and make the benefits more salient in order to enhance consumer adoption of products made from recycled plastics. Plastic Fantastic Truck Tour

Save Plastics, as a partner of TRANSFORM-CE, is involved in the Plastic Fantastic Truck Tour (PFTT), an international tour to demonstrate to a wide audience how plastic recycling works. The tour took place in September and October 2023. The idea behind the PFTT is to promote TRANSFORM-CE and its partners internationally and raise awareness about recycling plastic and the circular economy. Save Plastics has built a complete functioning mobile factory and brought it to various events to meet TRANSFORM-CE partners and explained why TRANSFORM-CE and the plastic roadmap are important. Live demonstrations were given of the intrusion-extrusion moulding (IEM) and additive manufacturing (AM) technologies.

Development of educational teaching packages

TRANSFORM-CE is developing educational programs for primary and secondary schools.
A set of lesson plans has been designed to teach children about the positive and negative aspects of plastic, how they can reduce their personal consumption of plastic, and how and what types of plastic can be recycled. The lessons will start at the beginning of 2023 in 15 schools in these three countries, though the plans will be free and accessible to download on the website of TRANSFORM-CE for all schools in Europe.

A symbolic Trophy

Looking for a great example of how plastic waste can be upcycled using additive manufacturing or ‘3D printing’? A unique, green recycled plastic trophy has been designed, printed and awarded to Typhon Treatment Systems as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) programme’s ECO I North West. The designer behind the trophy is Matthew Whittingham, a Research Analyst at Manchester Metropolitan University, who used two different 3D printing technologies to make the main body of the trophy – the green part – and the base.

Meet the Partner: bCircular

In this newsletter we would like to introduce our partner bCircular from Germany. bCircular provides green economy services in the areas of the circular economy and material flow management, energy and resource efficiency, environmental and climate protection.

bCircular helps in analysing the German plastic market and existing recycling processes, and disseminates the project results across the four TRANSFORM-CE partner countries. Being well connected to the region, bCircular contributes to TRANSFORM-CE by providing consultancy services and working closely with regional companies that will become part of the network. bCircular is sharing outputs across the partnership group and supports the CE Plastic Road Map.
