Professor Zhang is an international research leader in databases, data mining, health informatics, web information systems, and web services. He has published over 400 research papers in international journals and conferences proceedings and authored/edited 20 books.
Professor Zhang is an international research leader in databases, data mining, health informatics, web information systems, and web services. He has published over 400 research papers in international journals and conferences proceedings and authored/edited 20 books.
His research has been supported by a number of Australian Research Council (ARC) linkage projects and discovery project grants. His research has made significant impacts on society. For example, the multidisciplinary research into e-health has produced software systems and mapping tools to assist relevant government/industry organisations establish health needs, allowing the development of policy based on firm evidence.
Professor Zhang is the Editor-In-Chief of World Wide Web journal (Springer), and Health Information Science and Systems (Springer). He is Chairman of the International Web Information Systems Engineering Society (WISE Society.)
He won the VU’s Medal for Excellence in Research in 2005, and the VU Vice Chancellor’s Peak Award for Research and Research Training in Research Supervision in 2011, respectively. He is currently Emeritus Professor at Victoria University.
He was a member of Australian Research Council’s College of Experts (2008-2010) and also served as expert panel-member at various international funding agencies such as National Natural Science Fund of China (NSFC), the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund, National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) and UK’s Medical Research Council.

Immersive Rehab is a digital health start-up that is transforming neurorehabilitation by offering personalised and engaging neurorehabilitation programmes in Virtual Reality. Following a long neurorehabilitation period Isabel went through herself due to a work accident in 2010, she decided to start Immersive Rehab in September 2016. The aim of Immersive Rehab is to create neurorehabilitation exercises in Virtual Reality that improve patient recovery and reduce referral times, to enhance patient assessments, and to make rehab fun and engaging.
Dr Van De Keere is an experienced healthcare technology innovator, product strategist & manager, scientist/academic, product designer, experimentalist, and collaborator across disciplines. She is passionate about science, healthcare technologies, digital health, immersive technologies (VR/AR) and its applications in healthcare, using tech for good, social entrepreneurship, and promoting women in science & tech.

Every unique individual represents the core of health solutions and services. Technology in the integrated care domain is intended to provide support at the point of care, anytime and anywhere. This type of innovation includes data sharing between relevant users, and seamless interoperability of devices, tools and care providers.
Current State: Tech that can bring other services to a singular point will flourish in this developing market. Whether connecting devices to offer personal health insights, making scheduling and coordinating with caretakers more seamless, or automating once laborious processes, integrated care will be at the heart of impactful innovation in this space. Ease of use and functionality will be a key element to ensuring proper patient engagement and adoption, leading to future commercial success. Solutions can be developed and promoted on both the consumer and provider side with different pricing and services offered allowing user acceptability.
IDIH project focus: Work to be done will focus on new and innovative technologies for the following application areas:
- For the individual: tools to enable them to manage their own health conditions and/or care and support arrangements, getting information, advice, peer support etc.;
- For professionals: information sharing, shared records and assessments; happening in places but much nervousness about information governance issues;
- For organisations: in communicating and engaging with the public they serve crowdsourcing etc.
