ECOS | Environmental Coalition on Standards

Circular Economy

Buildings & Construction

Our aim is to make an environmentally sustainable built environment a reality. We work to apply circular and sufficiency principles at building and product level to make more efficient use of resources, decarbonising the EU building stock. In addition, we push for construction products to be made from low-carbon, sustainable and non-toxic materials, at the same time ensuring they are easy to repair and reuse. Finally, we strive for standards to strongly support EU climate targets, and help deliver a more sustainable built environment.

What we are working on

  • Pushing for an ambitious EU strategy on a sustainable built environment, harnessing the power of circular buildings and construction products; including development of an EU framework for sustainable buildings;
  • Influencing the revision of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) to include EU product requirements on environmental, functional and circularity, including strict limits on substances of concern for healthier buildings;
  • Calling for a forward-looking revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) to address lifecycle energy-use and carbon emissions of buildings, supporting deep renovation of worst-performing buildings as part of the EU Renovation Wave;
  • Pushing for stronger waste prevention requirements and waste reduction targets to reduce construction and demolition waste.
  • Contributing to the development of horizontal standardised methods for the assessment of the sustainability aspects of buildings and construction products under CEN/TC 350, in particular working on:
    • Assessing the environmental performance of buildings (WG1);
    • Standards for environmental performance declarations for construction products (WG3);
    • the Framework for assessment of buildings and civil engineering works (WG7);
    • Sustainable refurbishment (WG8);
    • Circular Economy in the Construction Sector (SC1).
