A standalone enemies to lovers romantic comedy Dating? Lower than a bikini wax on my list of priorities. Blind dating? Let’s just say I’d rather have a Brazilian - and not the hot soccer-player variety. So the fact I’ve agreed to do a blind-date feature for Pink, the magazine I work for, and write it all up Bridget Jones style means one thing - Pink is in dire straits and this is my best shot at saving my job. Make that my only shot because date number one is with Jack Reese – the son of the publisher of Pink – and he dislikes me as much as I dislike him. Or at least I thought he did.
Brenda is a USA Today bestselling author living in the English countryside. Originally from New York, she's lived in the UK long enough to gain dual citizenship, but still doesn’t understand Celsius. However, she has learned the appropriate use of the word “pants”. And how to order a proper bacon bap/barm/buttie. Because, well, bacon.
Brenda writes contemporary romance to make you giggle and swoon. When she’s not writing, she enjoys hiking, running and reading. In theory, she also enjoys cooking, but it’s more that she enjoys eating and, try as she might, she can’t live on Doritos alone.
Hello book friends! If you like romcoms, I've got a fun one to share with you today. Courtesy of Give Me Books I received a complimentary copy of The Blind Date Diaries by Brenda St. John Brown ,and it was a delightful read. Check out my review! ▪I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions expressed are my own.▪ ~REVIEW~ 🌟🌟🌟🌟 The Blind Date Diaries is just the type of cutesy and fun romcom I love for a light easy read. Angelina is, essentially, on assignment dating and writing about it for the magazine where she works, Pink. Her first date, Jack, is that guy you just love to hate, as well as the son of Angeline's boss. Thank goodness first impressions are not always truly representative of the person, at least not in this story. Jack, seemingly a jerk, may have redeeming qualities after all. Angeline might have to reconsider her feelings, or lack thereof, for Jack. Maybe he's not so bad? Is it enemies to lovers or enemies to enemies for these two? The journey to find the answer is delightfully sassy and slightly frustrating with a dash of sweet and spicy here and there for good measure. The characters complement each other, even when they are at odds, and I found Angeline and Jack quite entertaining. The story is nicely balanced and well written. Readers and fans of romcom and chicklit should definitely try this one! It is so reminiscent of How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, and I have always loved that movie! #GiveMeBooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #contemporaryfiction #romancebooks #flatlay #notyouraveragebookspam #booktasharks #romcom #chicklit #igreads #booknerd #bookworm #bookaholic #bookreview #brendastjohnbrown #theblinddatediaries #tbr #booksharks #currentlyreading #bookblog #booklife #whattoread #bookrecommendation #mustread
I really wanted to love this book, like I REALLY wanted to. After reading the blurb I was hooked. The plot sounded refreshing and I was ready for a good rom-com BUT I found the heroine to be bitchy, annoying, and slightly immature. I just couldn't connect with Angeline. She was incredibly difficult to like or relate to. The hero, Jack, on the other hand was pretty likable. He wasn't swoon worthy but I did enjoy him WAY more than Angeline. Overall, the plot was good and the story was well written, but because of the disconnect with Angeline I just couldn't enjoy the book and skimmed the last half of it. I am however interested in reading another book by Brenda. I think she's a great writer and this book hasn't completely caused to me to write her off as a "must read" author.
I just flew right through The Blind Date Diaries. The synopsis mentioned Bridget Jones, so I was all in right away. I am new to this author, but enjoyed her style. This is a romantic comedy that had me laughing out loud.
Angeline is the editor of the magazine Pink, which is in dire need of new readers. In order to get those readers, Angeline is supposed to go on blind dates and write about them. Her very first date is with Jack, her boss' son and a guy Angeline does not like. She is more than surprised when he turns out to be not all what Angeline expected.
I really like Jack, I think he's a realistic character. Someone who says stuff without thinking, and who has flaws, while still being likable. He tries so hard with Angeline, and I can't help but think that she doesn't deserve him. Angeline is confident and witty, but also rude and always expects the worst of Jack. She takes everything he says so personal, causing several fights and I wanted to shake her and tell her to chill out. Jack makes this gesture for her, and instead of reaching out to him she then gets upset that he doesn't. HELLO? He's waiting for you to acknowledge the freaking magazine feature...
The writing is so funny and I like the plot a lot. This would have definitely been a five star review, if I would have liked Angeline just a little more.
I started to read this book a few weeks ago and stopped at 18% because I wasn't particulary liking the main characters and the dynamic between them made no sense to me, I didn't undertand why they acted the way they did towards each other.
I think part of the problem was that I wasn't in the mood for this book, because I picked it back up and even when I still noticed those things, they didn't bother me as much. The dynamic between the main characters changes as they get to know each other and after they stopped being rude and defensive with each other, I actually enjoyed their relationship. My main complains with this are that they only hanged out like 3 times and even when the hero liked the heroine since before, I still think it's way to fast to say that you fell in love by the end of the book, and the other issue I had with this is that the ending was rushed.
This was a fun, fast, engrossing read. I quite enjoyed it.
I have a couple of complaints, but they didn't take away from my enjoyment too much: 1. I hate the way the hero keep referring to the heroine as "sweetheart." That's a term of endearment that I have a hard time hearing as anything other than sarcastic or otherwise not sincere.
2. The heroine is supposed to be fat, I think, or possibly just "plus sized." She occasionally refers to her curves, but I think she's probably like a size 12, and the way she and other characters talk about it comes off as a weeeeeeeee bit fatphobic. It sort of feels like she's apologizing for not being a size 4 every time it's mentioned, and I don't like that.
Also, be warned that the very first chapter opens with sex.
When Angeline is tasked with writing a new blind date feature for her magazine Pink, she's not exactly thrilled to learn it'll be her mutual enemy, Jack, her boss' son, that she'll be doing the blind date piece with.
I love it when rom coms aren't too fluffy, when the banter and the zing between the leads isn't sugary sweet, and that's exactly why I like The Blind Date Diaries so much - it's sassy and witty and fun and the chemistry between Jack and Angeline is hot!
ARC via Give Me Books Promotions for an honest review.
Considering it starts with sex it quickly fizzles out and it made me want to fall asleep.
I didn't feel any chemistry between the main characters, I found the whole premise unrealistic (who needs actual magazines anymore?) and I didn't particularly like the main female character.
Jack sounded nice although what was the whole thing with him saying "sweetheart " all the time, majorly annoying and tedious. That alone would a reason not to go on date 2 with him.
This was a fun enemies-to-lovers romance. Jack and Angeline have been at odds since their first encounter. He's a thorn in her side and also her boss's son.
To save her job she agrees to go on dates and then write articles on them. Her first date to help set the tone is none other than ... Jack.
This was a fast, fun, easy to read story and had more tender moments than I expected.
I think I have a new favorite Brenda St John Brown book! The Blind Date Diaries had everything you want in a romcom. It was funny, sweet, and sexy. Enemies-to-lovers is one of my favorite tropes and the tension between Jack and Angeline was perfect!
10/10 would recommend. Things I LOVE: Enemies to lovers, A Jerk hero who redeems himself ( I'm looking at you Jack) and a curvy gal that's strong! I loved this rom-com from start to finish, and I found myself laughing A LOT. This is one of those fun books, that starts out with an assignment which ends with so much more! If you're looking for a fun, laugh out loud romcom I couldn't recommend this one more!
i kept reading because i loved the premise and i thought it had a lot of potential, but i just didn’t love either of the main characters or their dynamic. jack’s excuse for being an asshole to angeline is because he gets nervous around her (which reminds me of how boys acted in elementary school) and a lot of the times it went from 0 to 100 to 0 to 100 (like when angeline tells jack she wants to have sex with him in the bar and then they go hang out with her brother and his girlfriend and they’re suddenly nervous about what the other person is thinking). i just don’t think this book was for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t know how I feel about this book, it’s the one thought that has followed me through out this entire book.
I didn’t exactly hate the book, but I found myself feeling uncomfortable or just not entirely sure about some of this book. I just got this weird vibe the entire time and It’s driving me crazy because I can’t pinpoint what it is.
I feel like I enjoyed myself, but I am not to sure (go figure) but the one thing I am for sure is that this book was easy to read so to a certain extent I did like it.
I found the characters a little frustrating because of their constant bickering and lack of communication. Maybe I’ll let the first two times slip maybe a third, but it was like a roller coaster. One minute it was all good and everything was great but everything set them off. You would think they could somehow learn from their behavior but nope.
Overall I’m left puzzled because honest I don’t know if I even liked this or if I would recommend this?
Angeline and Jack don't like each other but they say there is a fine line between love and hate.
Jack is Angeline's boss' son and drunken night nearly ended up them in bed together. So when her boss suggests that she delivers a series of articles called the Blind Date Diaries, Jack is selected as her first blind date. There is nothing more that Jack wants though is a real chance with Angeline.
With other blind dates that Angeline has to go on this book brought plenty of hilarity with the different dates and the ongoing banter between Angeline and Jack. This was a real fun read that lifted my spirits. A real feel good read with characters that you can't help but love.
This was a cute, Hallmark-moviesque book that I mostly enjoyed, though I do think it would be better in movie form. I did enjoy how Jack was very conscious of what he was doing--he recognized when he was making or had made a bad decision, and he addressed it, which I thought made him both human and a good person. Loved the sandwich guy and his sandwich puns. what I didn't love was the talk about weight. First, it came across that she was "fat", but she loves her curves and eats a lot etc etc but I'm pretty sure she said something about being a size 8? Babe. No. Also, eating is not a personality trait, and it kind of turned into a gag as the book went on, which I did not like at all.
The Blind Date Diaries by Brenda St John Brown is the story of Jack and Angeline. Angeline works for Pink Magazine and she has been tasked with an assignment to write about dates she is being chose to go on. Angeline first date turns out to be the owner son who she has a frenemy relationship with. What turns surprising is that the more time now she is with him the more he doesn't seem to be so bad and feelings tart to grow. This was a fun read for sure!
Brenda St John Brown never fails to 'wow' me. I was lucky enough to read an early version of The Blind Date Diaries, and I was hooked from the beginning. I found myself thinking about Jack and Angeline whenever I set the story aside, and they stuck with me after I finished. Be sure to pick this one up if you like hot and hilarious romcoms with great characters and tons of chemistry.
This book was absolutely delightful! Angeline and Jack have your typical frenemies vibe, full of tension and banter. I was pretty much smiling the whole book with how fun it was to read- even when Lowell appeared (man, did I want to junk punch that dude). Easy to read and light on the drama, it is a very heartwarming book that reminds you sometimes, first impressions can be deceiving.
A feisty rom-com that had me laughing. Jack Reese in particular drew me in, with his self-deprecating humor and drive to win Angelina’s heart. I love how the romance was set alongside Ang’s magazine job, reminding me a bit of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Great read!
I found this book discounted on Amazon via Bargainbooksy; this is my honest review. -I liked the premise of the blind dates - saving the magazine. I just didn't like that the owner would impose it on someone instead of asking for a volunteer. Also, to make matters worse, she chooses her own son as the first candidate as the "blind" date because he's so perfect. -I loved how Jack defines colors - per the Sherwin Williams paint spectrum. -I loved Chris' names for the specials of the day: Rye Can't We Beef Friends, etc. -Too bad there's no story about Melissa and Chris. -I thought Melissa and Angeline were a bit sexist when they laughed about the guy who owned 56 pairs of sneakers. That guy works at Footlocker so what's the problem? -Angeline is waiting for Jack to make a move or send a text but wasn't the whole page in a magazine for everyone to see enough? Apparently not. -Angeline and Jack start off their not-so friendly relationship at a tea party for staff, then they get physical after meeting in a bar and she leaves without her taking care of his needs. At another time, they do the deed on the sofa (protected) and A tells herself it was one hot make-out session; I'm sorry but going all the way is not a make-out session. They did it in the bedroom afterwards. There is no romance, no lust, just plain bedroom scenes. They had a good friendship and had some things in common. -In the epilogue we read: "We’ve kept our relationship quiet as far as Pink is concerned" - The whole world knows they are dating so I don't know what she's talking about. -Editing needs another pass: Driver's seat vs. passenger', Monday vs. Tuesday, commas where they don't belong, etc. -My 3 stars is all because of Angeline's attitudes. Jack did all the right moves but she couldn't deal with them or expected too much, diminishing Jack at every turn. She's also a spoiled brat. The book is interesting if you take off all those instances in the story.
I love a fiesty, snarky female POV more than I care to admit. And this book delivers just that. Alongside a dual POV from a swoony, but believably emotionally immature male counterpoint.
Things done right: The vibes are the same throughout, rather the characters are bantering with each other, talking to family or friends, or getting down and dirty. It truly reads as the same people at all times and not different personas to make the different scenarios happen. I despise when the sexy times feel like whole new characters come out of nowhere, with cursing and personality traits that aren't present anywhere else.
The growth and drama are real, but believable in proportion. I hate an over blown reaction and mid-story breakdown in some romance novels, so I enjoyed that this book kept things moving like normal people would.
The characters show real growth and have experiences that are realistic but still interesting to read about. A lot of relatable moments.
Things that would have made it a 5 star: Honestly, the magazine articles were not interesting enough. They evoked neither Bridget Jones or Carrie Bradshaw-esque feelings. There was a real opportunity to use a mixed media format in the book to really show the magazine layout and the articles and add in fun extra detail to bring it to life.
A little more backstory on Jack would have been nice. Why did he never feel good enough for anyone? What's his mom's full story and how did that effect him? Really, the backstories in general were a little light and there was room for improvement there.
Meet Angeline, she’s a 30-something ex-Manhatten social climber nursing a broken heart after her ex-fiance gets caught texting another woman. She’s moved back to her hometown, into her dad’s spare room, and now works as an assistant editor for Pink magazine.
Understandably, she wants nothing to do with romance but realistically has an itch that needs to be scratched. This leads to a vodka-fueled almost tryst that sets the precedent for this story. After her failed attempt to have a casual male-to-female interaction, she is left feeling embittered towards her would-be Lothario.
Pink is having problems, their paper copy sales of the magazine are in decline and something is needed to boost interest and thus revenue for the failing company as a whole.
This is where The Blind Date Diaries comes to fruition, a Bachelorette crossed with Bridget Jones’ Diaries style month-long feature.
Angelina’s first date, however, is none other than Mr Vodka Tryst.
Brenda St John Brown has created a cute, easy read rom-com novel where the witty one-liners will have you chuckling away to yourself. It’s a typical chick-lit story with the expected ending, so just hop in and enjoy Angeline’s quirky adventure!

I downloaded this book on the suggestion of one of my favourite authors, so I had absolutely no idea what to expect. But it was most definitely a pleasant surprise. I mean, i actually seriously enjoyed this story. It was easy, light and fun. Very cute and just all round enjoyable.
I like how Jake and Angelina are at constant loggerheads from the beginning, all because of one simple misunderstanding. And a whole bunch of insecurities. It’s a great reminder of how first impressions always stick with us and are hard to change, no matter how incorrect they are. That, and sometimes jumping to assumptions is a huge mistake that could potentially cost you your future happiness.
It was kind of fun to live vicariously through Angelina on her blind dates. I've never actually been on a date, and have no dating horror stories, so I’m always love reading about the joys and pitfalls of this. Plus, the whole set up just gave this novel such a beautiful romcom vibe. That, and the fact that you are constantly questioning whether Jake's mother knew of his feelings or not...
The Blind Date Diaries is a fantastic novel that transported me to a fun and easy world where love triumphs overall. It was funny and sassy, with enough heartfelt moments in it that your heart gets entangled. I absolutely adored the adorableness of this story and can't wait to read more tales of romance and love from Brenda St John Brown.
I enjoyed this book! Having read other books by this author, I knew I would enjoy the writing style, and I was not disappointed! I loved Jack so much! There were a few moments where I thought his ahole behavior felt a bit forced, especially considering he’s not actually one, but overall he was swoon worthy and I loved him. I like Angeline’s character quite a bit. I liked that she’s an editor and the overall plot of having to do the Blind Date Diaries for Pink; it was a fun concept. I didn’t fully connect with her character, but I still liked getting into her head.
Overall 4/5 stars for me! I definitely recommend this book, and this author overall (her Castle Calder and Maid in England books are excellent!).
