About this ebook

Wow. I had absolutely no idea I would love this book as much as I have. I really haven't been able to put this one down. I have been gripped from the very first page and found that I very quickly devoured this book in just one sitting. This is most definitely a five-star read.” Little Miss Book Lover 87 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’d grown desperate for company since the discovery of the dead woman in town.

Gloria is used to solitude. Widowed and still grieving her late husband, she spends her days with only her faded photographs for company. But when a young woman is murdered nearby, Gloria grows anxious. Living alone in an old farmhouse, surrounded by empty woods, there’s no one for miles who would hear her scream.

When freelance travel writer Beth arrives with her trailer to live on Gloria’s land, Gloria is relieved not to be alone. The police have no suspects in the murder and fearless Beth makes Gloria feel safe. Then Gloria discovers Beth is a widow too: the women become closer and begin to share their secrets.

But soon Gloria starts to wonder… what does she actually know about Beth? About what brought her to this isolated spot? About how her husband really died? Is it a coincidence that she’s arrived just as this small town has seen its first murder in decades?

Gloria thought that Beth had told her all her secrets. She was wrong.

An utterly compelling suspense novel that will have you hooked, Two Widows is a gripping thriller that will keep you up all night. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, The Couple Next Door and The Woman in the Window.

Two Widows is brilliant! I thought I had the plot figured out and then boom! I’ll meekly admit I didn’t have the plot figured, turns out I had nothing figured! Lots of red herrings but overall this is a clever story of friendship, loss and darkness. I read in two sittings because Two Widows was perfection! Two widows who connect through their stories of having lost a loved one and trying to explore new parameters of life. Gloria lives alone in an old farmhouse. Widowed and grieving her husband, mourning her broken relationship with her estranged son, lonely Gloria searches for answers in self-help books. Beth, freelance travel writer arrives with her trailer to live on Gloria’s land. Gloria is relieved not to be alone and feels safe. But then two young women are found murdered in decades. Gloria starts to wonder… what does she actually know about Beth? I found this book very well written. The book is narrated in alternating chapters between Gloria and Beth. I liked the character development of both the Gloria and Beth, wherein their past and present was revealed so as to gradually lead up to the suspense part of the book. It was a page-turner for me with all the twists and secrets. I had made so many guesses but all of them turned wrong. My only disappointment after reading this book, was its ending. After such an amazing plot throughout the book, it just kind of felt flat for me. But keeping that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

At the risk of sounding like yet again another broken record, I absolutely loved this book! I have said this so many times in my reviews this year and have genuinely meant it each and every time. The caliber of books I have read so far in 2020 have been outstanding and Two Widows is another one that falls into that category! This book had me right from the start. It is a mystery that had me entangled in its web, never letting me go until the final page. There is nothing better than reading a story were you have absolutely no idea where it is heading and how it is going to unfold and come together. Laura Wolfe does a fantastic job at keeping the reader in the dark throughout and right up until it’s satisfying ending. I enjoyed all the characters in the book and each have been written perfectly. I was immediately drawn to Gloria and my heart went out to her. Oh my goodness, the sadness falls off her in spades and she really got under my skin. She is a gentle soul that made me want to reach into my kindle and hug her tight. Beth is an intriguing character and I enjoyed how I was kept second guessing her intentions, as well as being taken back into her past where along the way we learn more about her and her motivations. She is very complex with many layers and Laura Wolfe has done a great job in bringing her to life. The story moves at the right pace giving you enough along the way to keep your interest and hold your attention. Laura Wolfe expertly weaves in the tension and suspense, leaving it to slowly bubble away in the background until it reaches boiling point! It is both a sad and thrilling tale and one that I could have quite easily read in one setting if life hadn’t rudely got in the way! Everything about this book is on point. From the sinister vibe of the cover, the mystery which is very well plotted, executed and compelling, a great host of diverse characters and themes, that is all wrapped in writing that is both so engaging and captivating, you could not ask for any more from this book! It is definitely one that needs to on you reading list stat! Laura Wolfe is a new author to me and one I am so glad that has popped up on my radar! Two Widows is one ripper of a read and I will be eagerly awaiting her next mystery. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to read and review Two Widows which I highly recommend. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Laura Wolfe for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Two Widows which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
