Garden Squares

Take a stroll through Bloomsbury and you’ll never be far from a glorious Georgian garden square. There are ten garden squares in all, each nestled among the elegant period properties that line Bloomsbury's leafy streets. Some, like Russell Square, are open to the public, while others, such as Bedford Square, are private spaces.

The Bedford Estates are proud to be custodians of some of these historic green spaces. Our dedicated team of gardeners tend these havens of nature, conserving their heritage and ensuring they give pleasure to visitors throughout the year.

Delve into the storied past of Tottenham Court Road Tube Station.

Opened in 1900 as part of the pioneering Central London Railway, it stood as a vital artery connecting the vibrant West End to the bustling City of London. Originally known simply as Tottenham Court Road, the station played a pivotal role in shaping London's underground transport network.

Throughout its journey, Tottenham Court Road Tube Station has witnessed evolution and transformation. In the 1920s, extensive renovations and reconstruction took place, ushering in new platforms and a spacious ticket hall to accommodate the burgeoning passenger traffic. Subsequent upgrades in the 1980s and 1990s further modernised the station, enhancing accessibility with new escalators and lifts.

Today, Tottenham Court Road Tube Station stands as a bustling junction, served by both the Central and Northern lines, making it a cornerstone of the West End's transport infrastructure. Positioned within easy reach of iconic landmarks and attractions, it continues to be a bustling hub, seamlessly weaving the threads of past and present.

#didyouknow that the London Building Act of 1774, a pivotal piece of legislation, laid the groundwork for the structured elegance that defines Bedford Square?

Back in 1774, this ground-breaking legislation set the stage for a meticulously organised urban landscape. It introduced standardised “rates” for new buildings, establishing a precise framework for construction. The rates, intricately linked to property size and dictated everything from wall thickness to structural nuances, fostering a sense of orderliness and uniformity in the evolving cityscape.

By ranking houses according to economic standards, this legislation gave rise to a tangible expression of social structure. Every dwelling, a piece in the grand puzzle, positioned itself on a scale that not only linked but distinguished the lower, middle, and upper classes.

Only the wealthiest in society occupied “First Rate” houses, of the kind that made up Bedford Square, which was considered to be particularly opulent during this time.

This idea of social justice based on stratification was economically expressed into a lasting physical form to create the built environments we know to exist today.

We are proud to share the success story of @groundwork_uk Green Team trainees, who have been working with our own Gardeners across our gardens and green spaces.

This year, 10 trainees joined the Green Team, and they have learned valuable skills in horticulture, landscaping and environmental management. They have also gained confidence, resilience and teamwork abilities.

Out of the 10 trainees, four have already completed the program and moved on to exciting opportunities. Three of them have found jobs in the horticultural industry, where they can apply their green skills and make a positive impact. One of them has joined the civil service.

The remaining six trainees are still on their placement, and we are looking forward to seeing their progress and achievements. We are grateful for their dedication and enthusiasm, and we hope they will continue to grow and thrive in their careers.

The Green Team is a wonderful example of how Groundwork helps people overcome barriers and realise their potential.
