Dr. Marten Hoeksema has received an ERC Starting Grant worth €1.5 million from the European Research Council. Marten Hoeksema received the grant to study cytokine signaling in macrophages. 
Researchers at Amsterdam UMC, in collaboration with colleagues at Harvard Boston, Crick Institute London and the University of Groningen, unraveled how the tuberculosis bacterium disables the patient's immune system
Can anti-angiogenesis therapy boost immunity? A study published in Angiogenesis by Prof. Arjan Griffioen and his research team. 
Dasja Pajkrt, Professor of Viral Pediatric Infectious Diseases, develops brain organoids in the lab to study the effect of viruses on the brain.
Sue Gibbs, Professor of Skin and Mucosa Regenerative Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, is pioneering in the lab with skin organoids: lifelike skin tissue, which can be used to study skin conditions, or the safety of certain dental procedures.
Derk Amsen has been appointed professor of Molecular T-Cell Immunology effective January 1 2023. In particular, Prof. Amsen will focus on the further development of therapies using T cells.
The government should invest money in a central and long-term study of post-COVID syndrome in the Netherlands. This is what Professor of Internal Medicine Michèle van Vugt (Amsterdam UMC) and lung specialist Leon van den Toorn (Erasmus MC) are pleading for. 
Currently, there is four times more scabies than a year ago: where did this epidemic come from and what can be done about it?

Do you have an affinity with marketing and communications? Does the online world of newsletters, websites and social media appeal to you? Would you like to help decide on AII's brand strategy? Then we are looking for you! 

The PR & public outreach committee is looking for 2 new members. The vacancy is open to all members of AII. 

Time investment: The PR & public outreach committee meets online every six weeks. If needed, members work separately on specific projects. This requires max. 2 hours per month.

Internal grants

AII Technician Grant
WHAT: A budget of 5.000 euro
WHO: Technicians working at research groups that are part of the Amsterdam institute for Infection & Immunity (AII registered PI and technician).
AIM: To stimulate technicians to visit a research facility elsewhere to learn/acquire new techniques/skills/knowledge, valuable to the research within AII.
DEADLINE: May 1, 2023

AII Work Visit Grant
WHAT: A budget of 5.000 euro
WHO: PhD students in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year and postdocs in the first 3 years after obtaining their PhD-degree.
AIM: To stimulate young talent to visit a research facility to actively build their CV and network while also obtaining new knowledge valuable to AII.
DEADLINE: May 1, 2023

External grants

The Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award
The Amsterdam Science & Innovation (AmSIA) award is the Amsterdam competition for research based innovative ideas that contribute to a better world. It is open to ideas from all research disciplines. AmSIA is organised by IXA for researchers and students in Amsterdam.

Three prizes of each € 10.000 will be awarded to the best idea within the categories of: Society, Health, and Environment & Climate. The categories are based on the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

Call for Junior Researcher Grant Longfonds
This grant offers young researchers (received your PhD less than five years ago) the opportunity to further develop their scientific ideas and create their own research niche for three years. Longfonds aims to provide two personal research grants of up to 200,000 euros.
Timeline: 

  • Deadline for submission of pre-proposal: 17 May 2023 before noon
  • Announcement of rejection / request for elaboration: early July 2023
  • Deadline detailed application submission: 8 September 2023 before 12:00 p.m.
  • Expected admission/rejection: early December 2023

De Boer-van Staveren Fund
The De Boer-van Staveren Fund is intended for innovative fundamental research in the field of autoimmune diseases by researchers at the beginning of their scientific career who, with the fund's contribution, have the opportunity to set up or further develop independent research. Each year, three scientific researchers are awarded a financial contribution of up to €50,000.

Deadline for application: July 1st 2023.

KNAW Early Career Award
The KNAW Early Career Award was established by the Academy in 2019 to recognize talented researchers at the start of their careers who are considered capable of developing and pursuing innovative and original research ideas. A maximum of twelve awards are presented annually, with a maximum of three awards in each of the four Academy domains. Laureates each receive of a work of art and a sum of € 15,000 to be used at their discretion for the benefit of their own research career.

Deadline for application: July 3rd 2023.
