On April 1 2022 Dr. Conny van der Laken was appointed Professor of Rheumatology, in particular the imaging of diseases of the musculoskeletal system. On November 25 she delivered her inaugural speech titled 'seeing more by looking beyond'
Eight researchers at the Amsterdam institute for Infection and Immunity have been appointed Principal Investigator, effective September 1, 2022. 
In early 2022 Marta Bermejo Jambrina visited the group of Prof. Wilfingseder at the Institute of Hygiene and Medical Microbiology at the University of Innsbruck. This work visit was made possible by the AII Work Visit Grant. 
Jelmer Savelkoel is one of the two UvA Thesis Prize winners of 2022. In his paper A call to action: time to recognize melioidosis as a neglected tropical disease, Jelmer argues for giving melioidosis the status of neglected tropical disease (NTD). 
The number of patients in the Netherlands who become infected with (cutaneous) leishmaniasis is currently limited to a few dozen patients per year. However, due to climate change, leishmaniasis may become endemic in the near future. 'Hopefuly that will stimulate the development of new treatments and vaccines', Henry de Vries, Professor of skin infections, says. 
Altered synovial gene signatures are detectable in individuals at risk of rheumatoid arthritis, which are associated with development of disease months to years later. This was demonstrated by Lisa van Baarsen's research group in her most recent publication. 
Sharp drop in recent HIV infections among men who have sex with men indicates the HIV prevention pil (PrEP) is working well. Prof. Marc van der Valk: "If this trend continues in the coming years, the Netherlands could become one of the first countries in the world with zero new HIV infections.'
Uganda has been struggling with an outbreak of the very deadly Ebola virus ‘Sudan variant’ since September. This Sudan variant has not emerged to this extent for some time, therefore vaccines that have been on the shelf will now be tested in practice. Martin Grobusch shares his view.
